Concacaf pave the road for USA

Friday, 22 June 07, 04:02 PM · Comments(5)

Although this topic is outside of my blog's nature I felt it must be spoken.

Last night the USA and Canada faced off in a semi final match for the Gold Cup.  The game for the most part went well, however at the very end of the match Canada was robbed in the most obvious of plays.  The Canadians were called off side on a header knocked behind the US defensive line BY A US DEFENDER!!! An off-side for those who are not familiar, perhaps the ref from that match, must be played by the attacking team.

How this back pass was off side is well beyond me. Craig forest, former Canadian Keeper, who is now an announcer in Canadian television even claimed it "Canada has been robbed by the ConCaCaf once again.

The goal , if it were to stand, would have leveled the match at 2 a side and sent the teams into an over time period.  A team like the US should not need any assistance in the Gold Cup, and if they do, they should be happy that they are finally playing  worthy opponents who will help them better their own game.

The call was disgusting and the ref should be banned from FIFA sanctioned match.  but of course he wont because it was such robbery that it must have been deliberate.  The US should be embarrassed for how they were awarded the win unfairly even though it certainly had no part to do with the players.

So now it stands with Canada vs Guadaloupe for 3rd place and the US (with lighter pockets) vs a under-preforming Mexico side.

Im sorry for all the US supporters who have to accept that their team was unjustly given the win, and Im specially sorry for all the Canadian supporters who could do nothing but watch in frustration.

With the distaste left from last nights match, I have to end this with Go Mexico!

I agree the call was terrible and completely wrong but to say it paved the way for the U.S.A to the finals is a bit misguided. In reality the U.S. dominated most of the game and if Donovan had not whiffed on a gimmie goal early in the second half the game would have been over. I agree the call left a bad taste and ruined a decent game but don't take it out on the U.S. If you want to root for Mexico that is fine. Maybe they will show some class this time and shake hands after the game.

I agree it was a bad call. There should have been a draw and it probably would have gone to extra time and maybe penalties. But who knows what the outcome would have been. I feel badly for the Canadians, but football is like that sometimes. The refs definitely need to improve in Concacaf.

I felt bad for the Canadians too. My wife is from Toronto so I support them. Except for the final match I thought the officials were brutal through the entire tournament especially with making offside decisions..totally clueless.

I am huge US fan but I agree it was a bad call. I think that the refs aren't seeing what everyone else sees. I believe the US would have won reguardless of that call though.

kittyinky,
i think you are right , the us would have most likely won. They deserved the win, however, thats why we play games. you never know what will happen. Congrats to the states for showing they are the best team concacaf in the final.
