En una entrevista al Diário Ole de Argentina (que nada tiene que ver con nuestra comunidad Ole Ole), el entrenador  Argentino disparó: “Los jugadores de Milan son buenos pero míos son los mejores”.

Creo que independiente de qual equipo tiene los mejores jugadores DT Miguel Russo perdió una gran chance de mantener su boca cerrada. Estoy seguro que esa afirmación será usada por el DT de Milan para motivar sus atletas.

Hablando de Carlo Ancelotti, ello preferiu un discuro más político, sin controversias en su entrevista al periódico italiano Correo Dello Sport. Ancelotti reconoceu que el equipo de Boca tiene un buen mix de joventud y experiencia aun que no possui la misma experiencia del equipo de 2003 que venció a Milan en la ultima vez que los dos equipos jugaram en el Mundial.

Ancelotti también recuerdó el facto de que los equipos sudamericanos tratán esa competitión com mucha mas seriedad que los equipos europeus pero que Milan no tiene la intención de cometer los mismos errores que Liverpool (perdió para São Paulo FC en 2005) o Barcelona (perdió para Internacional de Porto Alegre en 2006).

In a interview to Diario Ole from Argentina (which has no connections whatsoever with our Ole Ole community), Argentine coach shot this one:  “Los jugadores de Milan son buenos pero míos son los mejores” (Milan players are good but mine are the best).

I guess independently of which team has the best players coach Miguel Russo just passed on a great chance to keep his mouth shut. I'm sure his statement will be used in the pre-game lecture by Milan's coach to boost his team's motivation.

By the way, coach Carlo Ancelotti preffered to use a more political, less controversial, speech on his interview to the italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport. Ancelotti pointed out that Boca has a great mix of youth and experience even though it's not the same experience of the 2003 team who beat Milan the last time both teams played for the Intercontinental Toyota Cup.

Ancellotti also remembered the fact that this competition usually ia taken a lot more seriously by the South American teams but Milan doesn't want to make the same mistakes as Liverpool (beaten by São Paulo in 2005) and Barcelona (beaten by Internacional in 2006).

Acho que independente de qual equipe tem os melhores jogadores o técnico Miguel Russo perdeu uma ótima oportunidade de ficar calado. Essa frase tenho certeza vai ser usada no preleção do técnico Milanês para motivar seus atletas.

Por falar em Carlo Ancelotti, este prefiriu um discurso mais político, menos controverso, na entrevista que deu ao jornal italianao Corriere Dello Sport. Ancelotti ressaltou que a equipe do Boca tem uma ótima mistura de juventude e experiência apesar de não contar com a mesma experiência da equipe de 2003 que derrotou o Milan na última vez que as duas equipes se enfrentaram pelo Mundial Interclubes.

Ancellotti também lembrou o fato dessa competição geralmente ser muito mais levada a sério pelas equipes sulamericanas mas que o Milan não pretende repetir os erros do Liverpool (derrotado pelo São Paulo em 2005) nem do Barcelona (derrotado pelo Inter em 2006).

It's an odd thing. On the one hand FIFA are desperately trying to legitimise both the idea and appearance of the Club World Cup, a tournament that no one really seems to take seriously outside of South America; and on the other hand, they continue to act like silly, pedantic bureaucrats when they don't have to.

The reference in this case, is to the situation of Juan Roman Riquelme, Argentine midfield maestro, and arguably one of the world's best players. Riquelme was instrumental in Boca winning the Copa Libertadores, on loan from Villareal.

Now it was never Riquelme's intention to return to Villareal, and it was never Villareal's intention to keep him, and statements from Boca and the player made it clear that his future was at La Bombonera.

The eventual transfer, when it took place, was a long, drawn-out wrangle which was unfortunately just a few days after FIFA's "deadline" for squad registration for this tournament.

Now you can understand something like that happening for the Champions League, where it's an important competitive tournament, and there are scores of clubs. But the Club World Cup is essentially supposed to be an exhibition of world football, so why not allow Boca to exhibit the world's best?

Considering that some teams only qualify for this tournament a few weeks before FIFA's registration deadline passes, and that some teams sign players just to play in this tournament (Sydney FC with Kazu Miura, Auckland FC with Teru Iwamoto), it really is bizarre that FIFA didn't make some sort of exception to allow Boca to play Riquelme. After all, he was so instrumental in leading them to the Libertadores title.

It's a lose-lose situation for everyone, except, I suppose, Milan... although that's just a maybe - great players love to play against other greats.

The Japanese public would have been much more inovlved. The marketing opportunities would have increased. There would have been more worldwide TV and news coverage. More Argentines would care (Boca might be playing, but Riquelme is an idol all over his country, not just for his club), and more football fans in general. Merchandise, revenue, blah blah blah. Considering that FIFA are usually such greedy, money-hungry, profit-oriented fusspots, it really doesn't make any sense.

And speaking of sense, specifically common sense, FIFA could do with some soon. They allowed Milan to replace the inured Ronaldo with Giuseppe Favalli a few days ago, even though Ronaldo has been unfit for ages, and only had a very slim chance of playing in the first place. Perhaps a Boca player could have got injured?

Milan won the game versus Urawa with a 1 x 0 score in Yokohama last thursday. In the middle of the tsunami of japanese and international journalists I, humbly scored another huge goal for Ole Ole: a quick but exclusive interview with the best player of the world now. Kaká.

In this quick chat, kaká talks about the possibility of unifying the title of best player with the one of being part of the best team of the world, he also talked about the hard game agains Urawa and about his love for São Paulo FC.

Kaká, the best player of the world can now be part of the best team of the world. What does this represent for that young boy Ricardo that came from Brasília to achieve all of this? Ah, it's amazing. It's totally a dream coming true. It's wonderful to have the chance to play this Club World Cup again. This time I hope to win, because last time I came I didn't but this was just an amazing year for me. Being part of this team is really having the chance of being part of the best team in the world. 

Why do you think that Milan and also Boca had such a hard time to beat theorically smaller teams in the semifinals? Right, it's not easy. I believe, specially in our case, Urawa was the home team, they were playing for their history. I think it was one of the most important matches a japonese club ever played. So they played with enthusiasm, playing for their crowd, that's why it was difficult.

Now, let's say, São Paulo FC has one of the best structured teams in Brasil and just won the Brazilian League once again. Do you follow São Paulo's games? And is there any message you can send to their fans who certainly will be cheering for Milan this Sunday? TOh yeah, for sure. I always follow São Paulo's games, I follow the Brazilian League, all the cluns. One more time São Paulo are the champions, for the 5th time. I'm happy, I grew up there, I'm a São Paulo fan. I wanna send a big hug to all São Paulo fans and ask them to cheer for Milan because Milan represents Brazil in this game.

Washington has a calm, polite and nice way to talk, which might be the result of a battle that only some would be strong enough to win. In 2003 a heart problem forced him to end up earlier his european career playing for Fenerbahce. Back to Brazil, Atletico Paranaense believed in his capacity to recover and, "The Brave Heart" gave back the best way he could: 34 goals in the 2004 Brazilian Championship - an all-time record -  which helped his team to finish as runners-up. Now Washignton is an idol in Japan playing for Urawa Reds but he may soon be back to Brazil to bring joy to new fans.

Washington, did you already sign a contract with Fluminense?  Hahaha… Not yet. We are... They offered me a very good contract and we're talking. Of course I need to wait till the end of the Club World Cup to really sit and talk to them so we can, maybe, sign.

So that means you're totally foccused in winning this next game to give Urawa this 3rd place which can actually be considered almost a title of the 3rd best team on the planet? For sure. This sunday's game is a very important one to decide the 3rd place. We all gotta be very foccused. It would be an excellent way to finish the year. Of course we knew Milan were the favorites and they deserved the result but I believe we played well and left the pitch with our heads up which will boost our confidence to get fight for the 3rd position.

Both Milan and Boca had a very hard time beating teams that could be considered smaller in terms of world football. Why do you think that happened? Are the big teams lowering their level or the smaller ones are showing more efficiency?   Certainly football is not like in the past when a big team would sweep the smaller one all the time. It's not like that anymore. There are good teams outside Europe, Brazil... right? There are good teams with a strong roster and things are leveling up and we showed it out there. There also a team from Africa, our team from Asia and both represented their continents very well. I'm sure it will a great 3rd and 4th place decision on Sunday. 

Washington, now tell a little bit about you. I myself always saw you as a role model. You went through a very serious problem, and if I'm not wrong it was Atletico Paranaense the team who believed in you and helped you overcome that hard moment. Now you're, you're successful an idol in Japan, ALMOST going back to Brazil. How do you see your career, all this adventure that has been your profesional life? See, all of this that is happening to me now I always see as a present from God. After, as you said, the struggle I had to face to go back to the pitch I only had good things happening to me. So I think this a living proof that we should never give up on our life no matter how big the problem seems to be. One should fight and when he overcomes the plroblem he will be even stronger to achieve the siccess. So thank God after the problems all I had was joy, and happiness and wonderful moments and I'm sure it will be like this till the end of my career.

Calciatore professionista da oltre 18 anni, dal suo debutto al San Paolo nel  1989. In tutti questi anni Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, universalmente conosciuto come Cafu, è stato un personaggio modello.

È apparso sulla scena del calcio brasiliano proprio quando c'era la mancanza di un laterale destro di difesa, e da allora è diventato un idolo.

Ha raggiunto il top in carriera quando ha vinto con con il Brasile la quinta Coppa del Mondo dei verdeoro nel 2002.

Cafu è un "broda", come ciascuno chiamerebbe il suo migliore amico. E amichevole è stata la nostra chiacchierata, avvenuta appena dopo l'ultimo allenamento del Milan a Yokohama prima della semifinale del Mondiale FIFA per Club con gli Urawa Reds.

Cafu, dopo così tanti anni nel calcio sei sempre lo stesso, voglio dire, anche tu pensi di essere lo stesso degli inizi? Non ho dubbi, anzi non vedo perché uno dovrebbe cambiare. Sono lo stesso Cafu di trent'anni fa. Sono sempre stato il Cafu felice e bonario e sempre vincente, che poi è la cosa più importante, giusto?

Certamente... è molto importante... Hai vinto così tanti trofei, l'Intercontinentale col San Paolo nella fantastica rosa di Telé Santana e ora hai l'opportunità di vincere un altro titolo mondiale col Milan.  Provi sempre la stessa sensazione quando vinci un torneo? Naturalmente è così. Vincere campionati e coppe è sempre molto piacevole, significa che il lavoro che abbiamo fatto sta dando i suoi frutti. Sto ancora raccogliendo quanto seminato tanto tempo fa. Penso che vincere è semplicemente grandioso. Voglio sottolineare che questa è la mia quarta possibilità di vincere un Mondiale per Club, ne ho vinti 2 su 2 col São Paulo, poi abbiamo (col Milan) perso nel 2003 e ora ho la possibilità, con l'aiuto di Dio, di vincere questo col Milan.

Vero. Cafu, tu hai superato i 30 anni, come tanti altri componenti della rosa milanista. Qual è il segreto... Voglio dire, ti ho visto correre su e giù e crossare come il Cafu del San Paolo... qual è il segreto di questa forma eccellente? Io ho 32 anni ma non ci riuscirei mai. Il duro lavoro, tanto duro lavoro, dedizione, forza di volontà, è tutto importante, no? E la passione per il calcio, ovviamente. Credo che finché avrò passione correrò come hai visto qui. Quando mi renderò conto che la passione sta svanendo, capirò che è il momento di appendere le scarpe al chiodo. Ma mi sento ancora in forma e se, Dio volendo, non avrò infortuni, pensò che continuerò a giocare a lungo.

Che cosa intendi per “a lungo”? Hai dei progetti per il dopo? Vedi... ancora non so. Solo Dio lo sa, solo il tempo lo dirà, giusto? Se sto bene come oggi ho ancora la condizione per giocare tanto tempo, ma aspettiamo giugno. Voglio aspettare la fine di questa stagione per prendere una decisione.

Nesse bate papo rápido, Kaká fala sobre a possibilidade de unir o título de melhor jogador do mundo com o de ser parte da melhor equipe do mundo, da dificuldade que o time teve de chegar à final e também do seu amor ao São Paulo FC.

Kaká, o melhor jogador do mundo pode agora se juntar à equipe do mundo o que isso representa  para aquele menino Ricardo que saiu lá do interior, interior nào pq Brasília nunca foi interior né?  para aquele candanguinho, agora conquistar isso tudo? Ah, é demais. Realmente é a realização de um sonho. É maravilhoso para mim poder ter essa oportunidade de disputar esse mundial mais uma vez. Agora espero de poder ganhar. Porque da outra vez que eu estive aqui eu não ganhei mas foi um ano realmente maravilhoso. Fazer parte desse time é realmente a oportunidade de fazer parte do melhor time do mundo.

A que você credita essa dificuldade que tanto o Boca quanto o Milan tiveram nas semifinais, jogando contra equipes relativamente, teoricamente menores? É, não é fácil. Acho que, no nosso caso, principalmente o Urawa, um time que jogava em casa, jogava a história. Acho que um jogo, um dos jogos mais importantes que um clube japonês já fez, então eles jogaram com motivação, jogando dentro de casa,  com a torcida e por isso toda essa dificuldade.

Vamos falar que o São Paulo tem uma das equipes mais bem estruturadas do Brasil, ganhou outra vez o Brasileiro. Você acompanha o São Paulo? E tem algum recado pros tricolores que, eu tenho certeza, vão estar todos torcendo para o Milan no domingo? Tenho sim. Eu estou sempre acompanhando o Campeonato Brasileiro, acompanho o São Paulo, acompanho todos os times. Mais uma vez o São Paulo campeão, penta-campeão brasileiro, feliz, cresci ali dentro, sou um torcedor do São Paulo. Um grande abraço à todos os torcedores do São Paulo e que torçam pelo Milan, porque o Milan é o Brasil.

O jeito tranquilo, educado e simpático de Washington talvez seja consequencia de uma batalha que nem todos teriam forças para vencer. Em 2003 um problema cardíaco fez com que sua carreira na Europa jogando pelo Fenerbahce terminasse mais cedo. De volta ao Brasil, foi a equipe do Atlético Paranaense que acreditou no alteta e, o “Coracão Valente” retribiu da melhor maneira possível: foram 34 gols no Campeonato Brasileiro de 2004 – recorde do torneio - que ajudaram a garantir o vice-campeonato à equipe. Hoje Washington  é ídolo no Japão jogando pelo Urawa mas em breve pode voltar ao Brasil para dar alegria à uma outra grande torcida.

Washington, você já assinou com o Fluminense né? Hahaha… Ainda não. Nós estamos... Me fizeram um proposta muito boa, estamos negociando. É claro que tem que se esperar o Mundial (terminar) realmente para conversar com eles os detalhes para que haja, quem sabe, o acerto.

Então quer dizer que você ainda está concentrado em ganhar esse próximo jogo para dar esse terceiro ... é quase um título de terceira melhor equipe do planeta para o Urawa? Com certeza. É um jogo importantíssimo no domingo agora disputando a terceira colocação. Então tem que estar bastante concentrado. Tem que fechar o ano bem. É claro que sabíamos que o Milan era o grande favorito e fez por merecer essa vitória mas mas jogamos até de certo modo até muito bem e saímos de cabeça erguida mas nos dá confiança para buscar essa terceira colocação.

Tanto o Milan quanto o Boca tiveram muitas dificuldades para vencer equipes consideradas menores no futebol mundial. A que você credita isso? São essas equipes grandes que estão caindo o nível ou as euipes menores que estão realmente nivelando o futebol do mundo? Com certeza o futebol já não é mais aquele em que a grande equipe vai ganhar de goleada sempre. Não é mais assim. Tem boas equipes fora do eixo ali Europa ou Brasil né? Tem grandes equipes sim, formando fortes equipes e as coisas estão se nivelando também bem e isso demonstramos aí. Tem um time da África, o nosso time aqui da Ásia também acho que representaram muito bem e tenho certeza que vai ser uma grande partida também a disputa de 3º e 4º .

Washington, fala para mim um pouquinho porque eu sempre me espelhei muito na sua luta, porque você passou por um problema muito sério, né, e se não me engano, foi o Atlético Paranaense que te deu muita força e hoje você está aqui com essa carreira de sucesso sendo ídolo aqui no Japão, QUASE voltando para o Brasil, não vou colocar o carro à frente dos bois, como dizem lá em Minas Gerais, mas tá quase voltando. Como é que você resume essa sua carreira, toda a sua aventura da sua vida profissional? Olha, isso aí acho que tudo que está acontecendo comigo agora acho que é um presente que eu recebo de Deus sempre né? Depois da, como você mesmo disse, da luta que eu tive para voltar a jogar. De lá para cá só tive coisas boas e acontecido coisas boas para nós. Então isso  é um exemplo de que a gente nunca pode desistir na nossa vida por qualquer problema e quando você superar esse problema você vai ficar mais forte para ter sucesso. Então graças a Deus depois dos problemas eu só tive alegrias, tive só felicidades de viver momentos maravilhosos e tenho certeza de que vai ser assim até o fim da minha carreira.

Although the expected result materialised in this game, the manner of it was far from predictable. It was not a walkover for Milan. Urawa moved and passed sharply, defended tenaciously, and threatened repeatedly in a game that was eventually decided by the individual talents of Kaka and Seedorf.

In the 68th minute, the Urawa defence were sleeping as Pirlo took a quick free-kick from the centre circle, releasing Kaka down the left. The Brazilian, who had to work hard all night to be effective, was given an easy ride and acres of space by the defender and he powered towards the touchline before pulling a low cross back across the box.

Seedorf, having been thwarted repeatedly by the Urawa keeper Tsuzuki, finally put one it with a firm sidefoot and that more or less ended the game.

Urawa had threatened repeatedly throughout the game, with incisive, creative passing, and lots of movement off the ball. Unfortunately their 32-year old Brazilian striker Washington looked more like he was 45 years old, and was especially ineffective when up against Nesta & co. It didn't help that due to a combination of nervousness and excitment, several Urawa players opted to shoot from impossible angles and ridiculous distances for large parts of the game, when a little bit of composure and vision would have helped.

Still, Urawa were worth a goal. Yamada worked a sharp shooting chance when he came on, Nene wasted a header, Washington opted to try and curl a fancy shot with a clear sight of goal when power would have sufficed, and Nagai and Suzuki both fluffed good chances.

Once they conceded the goal however, Milan simply took control and killed off the game. Whilst Urawa managed to compete well with the Italian side on a technical level, they were always struggling on the physical side of things. At the back, they were good value. Nene is a tall athlete, Tsuboi is powerful, and led by the exuberant Tulio they were able to deal with the power and pace of the Milan attacks. However, the midfield was another story. Everytime Milan had the ball, Urawa had 2 or 3 players trying to win the ball back, because they couldn't cope with the physiques of the Milan players. At 0-0 there was no urgent need to win the ball in midfield, so they held their own with positioning and movement. However after going a goal down, Milan started to pass the ball around their midfield and defence, and Urawa had no answer. Pirlo , Ambrosini, Seedorf, Oddo and Jankulovski were all too strong and athletic for Urawa to win the ball back, and Ambrosini in particular seemed to outmuscle every Urawa player on the pitch.

Ultimately, it was the same old story, one of the age old failings of Japanese football, and sadly not something that can be easily rectified. The Japanese have been criticised over the years of not being physical and competitive enough. It seems that over the past 6 or 7 years, they have really worked on this aspect of the game, and players like Inamoto, Toda, Suzuki, Tusboi, and Tulio have a fantastic competitive streak. However, in terms of physique, there is not much that one can do when faced by Europeans or South Americans who are a good deal taller and bulkier than the Japanese. Japanese footballers on average are incredibly mobile, but this isn't too helpful in ball-winning situations, and when chasing a game.
