Brown: Campbell Pursuit Wasn't A Hopeless Cause

Wednesday, 03 September 08, 07:13 PM

Hull City boss Phil Brown has defended himself against the accusation that the club wasted too much time on a 'hopeless' pursuit to sign Fraizer Campbell whereas they should have concentrated on more realistic targets.
In the end the ex Tigers loanee was sent out on loan again by Manchester United in order to sweeten the deal for Tottenham over Dimitar Berbatov, leaving Hull empty-handed.

"The Fraizer Campbell situation became complicated and I just have to thank the chairman for sticking to it" Brown explained to the Hull Daily Mail.

"We were very hopeful of getting Fraizer all the way through. We'll keep in-house what went on, but we were involved with Fraizer until the moment he went to Tottenham.

"I have to say to the Hull fans that not only have they a chairman who's willing to put £7m on the table, but one who dealt with Tottenham and Manchester United.

"In the end, though, we just couldn't compete with Tottenham in the Berbatov deal."

Even had the Spurs note entered the frame it is debatable whether Campbell would have been sold to Hull, as United have been keen to stress that the top-rated 20-year-old has only left on loan and that they are very much looking forward to having him back closer to his potential.

Profile: Dimitar Berbatov

Wednesday, 03 September 08, 07:13 PM

Bulgaria’s most expensive-ever footballer has finally got his longed-for move to Manchester United. Goal.com profiles the mean, moody and majestic Dimitar Berbatov…

Having become the subject of the eighth most expensive transfer in football history - on the same day that Robinho’s deal put him fifth on that particular list - Dimitar Berbatov fulfilled his ’dream.’

The Bulgarian striker, disaffected at White Hart Lane, moved to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day for £30.75million, bringing to an end a protracted and often bitter episode of brinkmanship between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, for whom he has signed a four-year contract, with Fraizer Campbell joining Spurs on a season-long loan as part of the deal.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has long coveted the Bulgarian with the silkily sublime skills, and hailed him as one of the best strikers in world football when he’d finally signed him. But Berbatov, who is revered in his native country, and who made an immediate impact on the Premier League when he joined Spurs, also displayed a sulky side, and had been axed from Juande Ramos’s squad and criticised by his team-mates in his final week as a Tottenham player.

So who exactly have United bought for so much money, and what makes him tick?

Early Days

Dimitar Berbatov was born in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, on 30th January 1981, to sporting parents. His mother Margarita was a professional handball player; father Ivan a professional footballer with local side Pirin Blagoevgrad.

It was at the same club, Pirin, that Dimi began his own career, having been in love with the game since boyhood. He is said to have supported AC Milan initially, modelling himself on their superstar Dutch forward of the time, Marco van Basten. However, when he was 15 he discovered a new hero at Euro 96 - England striker Alan Shearer. His dream then was to play for Newcastle United and wear for real the famous black-and-white striped shirt rather than the replica one he insisted on sleeping in.

Role models loomed large in Berbatov’s early life because he taught himself English with the aid of repeated viewings of the Godfather films; his distinctive appearance today owes much to his resemblance to the actor Andy Garcia, who figured prominently in the third film of the mafia trilogy.

CSKA Sofia & International Recognition

Having followed in his father’s footsteps to Pirin Blagoevgrad, he was soon spotted by top Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, who signed him when he was just 17. In the 1998-99 season, aged 18, he made his debut for the capital club. He made 16 first team appearances and scored six goals that season.

The following campaign (1999-2000) saw him net 16 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions, and the next season he’d scored 15 in just 16 games before Bayer Leverkusen bought him in January 2001.

By then Berbatov had won the Bulgarian Cup with CSKA in 1999 and earned his first cap for Bulgaria, against Greece, in November of the same year. Within three months he’d scored his first international goal, against Chile.

The Move To Bayer Leverkusen

His German career began fairly quietly; Berbatov average a goal every four games (16 in his first 67 appearances) in a Bayer shirt. But he was making an impression in the Champions League, scoring a classic individual goal against Lyon in his first season with the club, then netting against Liverpool in the quarter-finals and replacing Tomas Brdaric after 38 minutes in the final against Real Madrid.

In 2001–02, as well as finishing runners-up to Madrid in that Champions League final, Leverkusen were runners-up in both the German Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal (national cup), and by 2002-03, Berbatov had established himself as Bayer’s leading striker, although he managed only four Bundesliga goals that season. In contrast, his five in six games for his country helped Bulgaria qualify for Euro 2004.

In 2003-04 he hit 19 goals in 36 games for Bayer, and in 81 appearances over the subsequent two seasons he racked up a further 50 goals for the club, including five in the Champions League of 2004-05. That season saw him named Bulgarian Player of the Year for the third campaign in succession.

By now major clubs throughout Europe were monitoring his progress with keen interest and in summer 2006 they were vying for his services. He might have joined Manchester United then, but by their own admission they acted too slowly and Tottenham Hotspur won the race, snaring Berbatov for £10.9million in May of that year. The fee made him the costliest Bulgarian layer in history. On 1st July 2006, after he’d been granted a work permit, his transfer was completed.

On To Tottenham Hotspur

Berbatov scored two goals in two minutes in his first Spurs match, a pre-season friendly against Birmingham City. That was followed by a goal just two minutes into his first competitive match for Tottenham, a Premier League clash against Sheffield United at White Hart Lane.

Despite the then Spurs manager Martin Jol’s rotation policy with his forwards, Berbatov established an excellent strike partnership with Robbie Keane. In the first of his two full seasons with Tottenham, the Bulgarian scored 23 goals in 49 games, including seven in the Lilywhites’ Uefa Cup campaign. 12 of his goals had come in the Premier League, but he’d also supplied 11 assists in his 33 appearances. In April 2007, joint-winners Berbatov and Keane became the first players to share the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month Award since Arsenal’s Dennis Bergkamp and Edu (February 2004). Berbatov was also selected in the Premier League's PFA Team of the Season, and was named the Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Season for 2006-07.

A further 23 goals followed last season, including his first Premier League hat-trick on 29th December 2007 when he hit four in Tottenham’s 6–4 win over Reading. He also scored at Wembley in the Carling League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley - an equalising penalty as Spurs won 2-1 in extra-time to give him his first medal in English football.

Finally, Transferred To Manchester United

Throughout the summer of 2008 Berbatov was unsettled by rumours of a substantial bid from Manchester United - a club whose style of play, success and participation in the Champions League fuelled his ambition.

In July Ferguson was wrongly quoted as saying: "We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov," and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy flew into a rage of righteous indignation, reporting United to the Premier League and threatening to submit a dossier of evidence dating back a year detailing, what they claimed, an illegal approach to Berbatov by United, who denied any wrong-doing

By mid-August, reports were claiming that United had lodged a bid for Berbatov with Spurs. Ramos felt the speculation meant Berbatov had lost focus and, although he trained with the first-team, he was dropped for Tottenham’s games against Sunderland and Chelsea.

On Monday 1st September, transfer deadline day, Manchester City - newly taken over by an organisation acting for the Abu Dhabi royal family, had a bid for Berbatov accepted by Spurs. But United managed to hijack the deal with what has been described as a smash-and-grab raid - one that reputedly left Spurs fuming, though they have decided not to pursue any legal action against the Red Devils. Spurs claimed United had illegally approached the player, who was flying into Manchester for talks with City, when Ferguson met him at Manchester Airport without Spurs’ permission. Ferguson apparently drove Berbatov in his Bentley with the player hiding under a cover on the back seat.

Did You Know?

  • Outside football, Berbatov’s hobbies include drawing and basketball.
  • Berbatov scored his first Premier League double for Spurs in a 5–1 victory over Charlton Athletic.
  • Berbatov came on as a second half substitute for Tottenham against Fulham in the FA Cup to score his first two goals in the competition.
  • When Arsenal beat Spurs in the North London derby on 22nd December 2007. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger compared Berbatov to Thierry Henry.
  • Others have predicted that his influence on Manchester United’s young side could be similar to that of Eric Cantona’s in the early-mid 1990s.
  • Berbatov has been given United’s number 9 shirt, vacated by Louis Saha.

MANCHESTER UNITED, Berbatov never considered City

Wednesday, 03 September 08, 07:00 PM

Dimitar Berbatov has insisted that it was always his goal to secure a transfer to Manchester United.

The Bulgarian striker was linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer but on transfer deadline day it briefly looked as though he could join Manchester City.

Tottenham accepted an offer from City before United agreed a £30.75million deal for his services.

Berbatov admits he was flattered by City's interest but only ever wanted to link up with Sir Alex Ferguson's Premier League champions.

"I have very big respect for the offer of Manchester City," said Berbatov.

"Because of it, the transfer to Manchester United was held up for three or four hours.

"But for me there was only one goal, to wear the red shirt of United.

"If I wanted to play for the money, I would accept the Manchester City offer or one from Chelsea, but no, I want to play for the biggest club in the world and that's why I am here."

Berbatov has been backed to make a major impact at United by new team-mate Ryan Giggs.

The Welshman believes that Berbatov can inspire United in the same way that Eric Cantona did over a decade ago.

"He plays in a very similar position to Eric, and he has a similar physique," Giggs said in the Daily Star.

"And I don't think he'll be intimidated by the price tag or by coming to United."

Giggs is convinced that Berbatov has the right attitude to cope with the pressure of playing for United.

He said: "Manchester United centre forwards, or creative players, have to have that sort of mentality - the type who thinks if he does miss a chance, he'll put the next one away."

Tottenham Retain Corluka Hope

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Tottenham Hotspur have not given up hope of bringing Vedran Corluka to the club this summer, despite Manchester City’s insistence that the Croatia international is not for sale.

After a fine debut season in the Premier League, followed up by an impressive Euro 2008 campaign, the defender’s reputation rocketed, seeing him linked with several other English clubs.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Juande Ramos and Spurs are top of the list of pursuers, and while City manager Mark Hughes remains confident that the player will remain at the City of Manchester stadium, Corluka’s representatives appear to have other ideas.

The 22-year old reportedly has an £8 million release clause in his contract which the north London club hope to capitalise on, and with Thaksin Shinawatra’s future at the club still in doubt following his offer to withdraw from the club, the money may be seen as welcome rest-bite.

Corluka’s exit would, though, cast a cloud over Hughes’ power at Eastlands, with the former Blackburn Rovers manager already having to go public with an explanation as to who is in charge at the club after a number of reports suggesting disharmony among the squad.

Triumphant Advocaat Says Arshavin Will Stay

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Zenit St Petersburg boss Dick Advocaat was doubly delighted after his side's European Super Cup win over Manchester United on Friday as he was also able to announce that star striker Andrei Arshavin is staying at the club.

The Uefa Cup winners were irresistible for long stretches of the 2-1 victory, which was a source of immense pride for the Dutch coach.

“The way we played tonight was superb and we definitely deserved the victory,” he trumpeted.

“In fact I am surprised we did not score more goals. We deserved to win by a bigger margin.”

On the subject of Arshavin, Advocaat said: “The door is closed, the deal is closed.

“Tottenham did not offer the 22 million pounds ($40.28 million) we wanted for him and what we think he is worth. They offered 16 million pounds and, with respect, that is not enough so that’s the end of it.”

Woodgate Excited By Pavlyuchenko

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Tottenham centre back Jonathan Woodgate has hailed Juande Ramos' judgment in bringing a player of Roman Pavlyuchenko's calibre to the north London club...

Tottenham Hotspur have long been linked with a striker. The well-documented misery of want-away Bulgarian, Dimitar Berbatov, has given the speculation further credibility.

In the wake of Robbie Keane's departure to Liverpool, Darren Bent remains the only devoted striking option available to Tottenham.

Jonathan Woodgate feels the presence of Pavlyuchenko would give the squad a much-needed boost, he told Sky Sports News: "Pavlyuchenko is a top player. He was excellent at the European Championships... He would be a great signing we have a lot top players here and hopefully he would add to that."

"He would get a lot of goals. He is a tremendous player who is good in the air and with his feet," he concluded.

The signing of Pavlyuchenko, who is believed to be in London undergoing a medical examination, would effectively signal the end of Berbatov's career at White Hart Lane, who would still be an attractive proposition for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Pavlyuchenko In London?

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Tottenham target Roman Pavlyuchenko is reportedly in London today to complete his move from Spartak Moscow...

Early reports suggest that Russian star striker Roman Pavlyuchenko could be kitting out for the Lilywhites as early as Sunday, as he is tying up the ends of his £15million move from Spartak Moscow. The forward will be sign for Tottenham Hotspur pending a medical.

The signature of the Russian international could spell the end of sulky Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, who has been pleading for a switch to Old Trafford for some time.

Juande Ramos' Spurs side have been distinctively thin up-top since the sale of Jermain Defoe in January to Portsmouth, the summer transfer of Robbie Keane to Liverpool, and the public sidelining of Berbatov due to his incorrect frame of mind. Darren Bent has been the only option thus far, and Ramos is keen to remedy that.

Spurs To Swoop For Veloso?

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Tottenham Hotspur are readying a late move for Sporting star Miguel Veloso, according to reports...

The Guardian claims that Spurs boss Juande Ramos has pegged Veloso to anchor a midfield which has proved somewhat porous in the opening weeks of the Premier League season.

The North London club have spent most of the summer increasing their attacking and creative options, bringing in Luka Modric, David Bentley, Giovani Dos Santos and Roman Pavlyuchenko, whose £12million switch from Spartak Moscow is all but complete.

But the Lilywhites remain suspect on the defensive end, having conceded four goals in two games, and many are pointing the finger at their lack of steel in the centre of the park.

Veloso would go along way toward solving that problem, as he is widely regarded as one of the best young holding players in Europe.

The Portuguese international will not come cheap, however, as Sporting have shown they are reluctant to let any of their current crop of youngsters leave - at least not for anything less than top dollar.

Everton have learned that the hard way, as their desperate attempt to prise Joao Moutinho from the Estadio Alvalade continues to be foiled by the £20million price-tag.

But Spurs have had no problem splashing the cash this summer and may well be willing to pay whatever it takes to bring Veloso to White Hart Lane.

Ramos and co will have to act fast though, as the transfer window closes on Monday and they are still thought to be haggling with Zenit St Petersburg over Andrei Arshavin.

Henrik Larsson To Return To Prem?

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Ageing Swedish striker Henrik Larsson is a reported target for Tottenham Hotspur and Everton...

Henrik Larsson spent a three month loan spell helping Manchester United to the first of their back-to-back Premier League titles. Sir Alex Ferguson's signing split the critics. Some hailed the deal as a masterstroke, others questioned what the then 35-year old could offer the Old Trafford ranks.

Currently at Swedish side Helsingborg, Larsson is again subject to a move to the Premier League, this time netting goals for Uefa Cup hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

The Daily Mail are reporting that after a row with Helsingborg chairman Sten-Inge Fredin, the former Barca striker may be keen on a deal away from Sweden.

The transfer window closes on Monday. Everton have signed three players in the past week, Tottenham have been the busier of the two clubs over the course of the summer though, and will be eager to replace Robbie Keane who joined Liverpool.

Woodgate Slams Berbatov

Friday, 29 August 08, 07:52 PM

Tottenham defender Jonothan Woodgate has waded into the debate over Dimitar Berbatov’s future by criticising the striker’s attitude which he suggests has had an adverse affect on the harmony within the team.

Berbatov has made it more than clear that he wants to leave White Hart Lane this summer, with Manchester United the most likely destination, and has been left out of the side recently as manager Juande Ramos has claimed his striker isn’t focused on the job in hand.

“If it was me, I wouldn’t do it in the first place – I would play. It doesn’t give out a great message but it makes the boys work twice as hard for each other," Woodgate was quoted as saying in The Telegraph.

“If I was in the same situation, I would be working for the club as hard as I could until told otherwise. I’ll always give 100 per cent wherever I am. If I didn’t want to be somewhere, I’d still give my all – every training session, every game, all the time.

He added: “It surprised me because I thought he would be back in the squad but we back the manager 100 per cent. Everyone has to work for each other.

“It hasn’t exactly boosted the reputation of professional footballers in this country from the supporters’ point of view. There’s always two sides to the story, though. We need everyone to be pulling in the right direction.

“If he was fit and said he didn’t want to play, I’d be disappointed. He’s a Spurs player so you expect him to give 100 per cent.”

Woodgate went on to say that he doubts that Berbatov would dare to pull the same prima donna act at Old Trafford.

“I’m sure he’ll have the whole package when he turns up at United," he added.

“If he doesn’t, then with the players they have, and the manager they have, everyone knows what will happen.”
