PAT NEVIN: TAKING STOCK

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 06:56 AM

All goes quiet on the club football front for a fortnight but Pat Nevin has plenty to reflect upon in his weekly column.

Sometimes a match can be summed up in a couple of words. With the Tottenham game on Sunday, the words were 'infuriatingly frustrating.'

This one fizzled out in a fairly flat manner at the end, but that can happen. Spurs carried their luck when they needed it and they broke up the play in a very un-Tottenham like way. As is usually the case on these occasions, it made you think less about the players on the field and more about those who were missing on the day.

The powers of Drogba and Ballack were the most obvious, but there was also the thought that there might just be another signing before the transfer window closed, someone who could add something for the coming months.

Well the transfer deadline came and went last night and much to the surprise of most observers Robinho decided to go to Manchester City and not Chelsea. It left the club's spending more or less neutral over the summer months, not something many people would have predicted.

There may be some disappointment regarding the Robinho affair in particular, but the situation at Eastlands appears to be almost unique. I suspect the new owners up there would have spent the equivalent of the GDP of a small European country to make this signature signing.

The Brazilian is a quality player, but if he is not considered to be worth breaking the bank for, then it is a good idea not to get into a bidding war, after all remember how much we paid for his new team mate Shaun Wright-Phillips? A good player, but did anyone think he was really worth £21 million?

So this is the squad the club will have to run with until January at least and if there are few long-term injuries to key players it should be enough. Even so there is a lot to survive between now and then. There is of course the group stage in the Champions League and although it is never easy, the draw certainly could have been less kind.

Maybe the best thing about the draw was the way the fixtures themselves have fallen. The last thing you want is to be scrapping in the last game, so with the first three games being Bordeaux at home, then Cluj - the weakest team in the group - away from home, before the formidable Romans arrive at the Bridge, it has panned out well.

The Italian match will be a tough one, but if the Blues can win those first two as they should, then that third one could almost put us through.

Of course we are getting ahead of ourselves a touch, but there is always a temptation to do so in an international week and no Blues have no game to look forward to. It is the first breathing space for Phil Scolari since he took the job and a great opportunity for him to sit back and really think about what has to be done.

He will want to consider where the weaknesses are in the team, and indeed in the squad as a whole in the longer term. The imminent return of Didier Drogba will however give him a huge increase in his options.

The attacking options against Spurs were limited late in the game, and maybe that was understandable following the transfers of Shevchenko and then Shaun Wright-Phillips. Last week on this page I was wishing Sheva all the best and I would like to do the same for the little English winger this week.

Like his former teammate now in Milan, SWP always had that initial transfer fee millstone round his neck. Really that has nothing to do with the player, he isn't part of that part of the negotiation. (And by the way the player doesn't receive 10 per cent of the fee as the old football folk lore used to suggest.)

However because of the money, the expectations were understandably high from everyone and that pressure certainly wouldn't have helped him.

He was unable to command a regular place, which was never going to be easy considering the standard of players around him. There was also the minor fact that the team often played without and out-and-out winger at all. It was often as frustrating for Shaun as it was for those of us who were waiting for it to happen on a regular and dependable basis.

In the end the move back to Man City will be good for him as he will get regular football, Sunday's goals v Sunderland have proved that already. It is also good for the English national team as he will then be more in the thoughts of Fabio Capello by playing every week.

He might not have been able to make himself a fixture at Chelsea, but as David Beckham ages, he might still have a chance of making that right wing berth for his country all his own.

SWP's departure also continues the job of our own manager rebuilding the team in his own particular image. He was clearly frustrated on Sunday and this will play on his mind during this international break period. He will not however be too down beat when he looks at the clubs expected to challenge this season, no one is streaking out ahead.

Liverpool struggled yet again at the weekend, this time at Villa and they have injury problems of their own. I was in Monaco for the Manchester United Super Cup match against Zenit St Petersburg on Friday and they looked anything but impressive in a 2-1 defeat following on from their patchy form in the Premier League already.

Chelsea's season's start was impressive but there will be ups and downs and the boss will know that, so there should not be too much brooding over the next week or so. After all, the league table still looks pretty good after those first three games.

Last week's competition was a little tougher than usual, but still more than 70 per cent of you who answered, got it right. Chelsea's biggest opening day league win in the past 30 years was indeed the 5-0 hammering of Derby County in 1983. The winner of the Chelsea DVD who was picked at random, by the young lady pictured on the front page of this week's Southern Reporter (Scotland) newspaper, was Charlie Paxton from Watford.

And at the Uefa Champions League group draw last Thursday, Chelsea's vice captain was given the prestigious Uefa Midfielder of the Year Award.

The midfielder also elaborates on a recent bonding session between the players and staff and much more in the letter only available to e-members.

Our other e-membership benefits include a monthly column written by Blues legend Graeme Le Saux, as well as weekly competitions where e-members have won a range Chelsea prizes from signed balls to Megastore vouchers.

CALL-UP ROLL CALL

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 06:18 AM

As usual in recent years, there are more Chelsea players heading off than remaining behind when international duty calls.

Chelsea quintet Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Wayne Bridge and captain John Terry head off for England duty as Fabio Capello's side face trips away to Andorra and Croatia.

Having been dumped out of Euro 2008 qualification by Croatia in Steve McClaren's last game in charge, Terry and colleagues will be looking for a place at the top of Group 6 with victories in Barcelona and Zagreb on Saturday September 6 and Wednesday 10 respectively. Trips away to Belarus and former Blue Andriy Shevchenko's home territory of Ukraine await England in a group that is by no means a formality.

Chelsea will be well represented when Portugal turn out in their first two World Cup qualification games away to Malta and then at home to Denmark as Ricardo Carvalho, José Bosingwa, Paulo Ferreira and playmaker Deco have been called up.

Whilst three points should be a formality first up, Deco and co. must be at their best to see off a Danish side currently ranked at 36th in the world. A good start is a must in a tough group that also includes potential slip-ups in the form of Hungary and Sweden.

Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka aim to set France up for qualification when they take on Austria and Serbia in Group 7's first two set of fixtures. Kicking off in Vienna, the Chelsea players will be looking for a win to set up a tricky encounter against fellow Blue Branislav Ivanovic's Serbia in Paris. Lithuania, the Faroe Islands and Romania, a country listed above France in the latest Fifa rankings, fill in the rest of the group.

The Czech Republic has included Petr Cech in its squad to face Northern Ireland on September 10. Cech, recently named by Uefa as the best goalkeeper in last season's Champions League, will seek to keep out a resurgent Northern Ireland, a side which has seen off both England and Spain in Belfast in recent times.

Qualification, however, is expected from the Czechs in a group featuring Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Northern Ireland and whipping boys San Marino.

In the African qualification section, which has already completed four rounds of matches, Salomon Kalou has been selected for the Ivory Coast for their trip away to Mozambique on September 5 whilst Michael Essien has made the Ghana squad for their match against Libya in Tripoli.

Ghana top Group 5 with 9 points from 4 games, the Ivory Coast leading Group 7 after 2 wins and 2 draws in their opening fixtures.

Alex is Chelsea's only representative in the South American qualifying section, as the five-times World Cup winners face an uphill struggle to make the Finals in South Africa in 2010. Currently fifth in the table, Brazil travel to Chile on the September 6 before hosting Bolivia on the 10th as they try to force themselves into fourth and an automatic qualification spot.

Chelsea striker Ben Sahar, currently on loan at Portsmouth, has been named in Israel's 23-man squad for the forthcoming fixtures at home to Switzerland and away to Moldova as they kick-off their Group 2 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Reserve goalkeeper Rhys Taylor has been picked by Wales U-21 boss Brian Flynn for the upcoming Uefa U-21 qualifying match against Romania in Iasi on Tuesday September 9. He is expected to feature following the promotion of Wayne Hennessey to the full squad last week.

Michael Mancienne will look to win his sixth England U-21 cap when the young Three Lions take on their Portuguese counterparts at Wembley in their Uefa U-21 European Championship Group 3 qualifier on the Friday September 5. Michael is joined by Ryan Bertrand, currently on loan at Norwich, in his first call-up for the Under 21s.

Miroslav Stoch has been named in the Slovakia U-21 squad for the Uefa U-21 Championship qualifiers against Belgium and Iceland. Slovakia lie second in the group headed by Austria and may have to settle for a play-off berth.

ARSENAL RESERVES 2 CHELSEA RESERVES 3

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 05:05 AM

Didier Drogba successfully completed just under an hour's football on what was a good opening to the reserve team season.

After four months of recuperation on a knee problem, it was an understandably steady rather than spectacular start to his 2008/09 campaign - but there was a sure sign of the real Drogba in creating Chelsea's first-half equaliser, providing a platform for his younger colleagues to accelerate away for an admirable win.

There was plenty of entertainment throughout a game full of pace and attacking attention from both sides.

There was an opening within a minute for Chelsea, Scott Sinclair running clear with the offside flag staying down but a well-timed covering tackle saved the home side.

From the corner that followed, Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny mis-read Miroslav Stoch's shot totally and was fortunate indeed to see his half-save loop up and over the goal.

Chelsea were kicking down the Barnet slope, a significant advantage on this ground, but it was not enough to prevent Arsenal taking a 10th minute lead. Following on from a couple of threatening shots, Chelsea were slow to clear the ball and from the edge of the six-yard box, Mark Randall poked the ball home.

After the early set-back, Chelsea will be pleased not have fallen further behind as Arsenal maintained the pressure.

Jack Wilshere scooped over when well-placed and with the Blues defence looking stretched, Rui Fonte was able to cut in and fire across Taylor, the Chelsea keeper relieved to see the ball strike the far post and fall kindly.

Arsenal winger Fran Merida tried his luck from further out and Taylor tipped over.

After 20 minutes of pressure, Stoch began the Chelsea retaliation with a trick past his marker and a low drive that was saved.

Where Brendan Rodgers's side were having joy was with the ball behind and the well-timed run and one such dash from Sinclair was followed by a low cross in Drogba's direction. It was cut out with the striker poised to score.

The clearance only went as far as Sinclair whose follow-up shot looked on its way in before Wilshere did well to clear off the line.

That was on 25 minutes and the crowd saw the best of Sinclair three minutes later as he dribbled through and shot, only for Szczesnyto pull off a commendable one-handed save with next to no reaction time.

Arsenal attacked once more when the speedy Jay Simpson worked his way past Nana Ofori-Twumasi but Taylor saved.

Drogba was finding possession hard to find but on 31 minutes came his best moment yet and the pas of the game. He picked out Sinclair from a position out on the touch line, only for the England Under 19 winger to shoot over.

Chelsea's midfielder Sergio Tejera was booked for an off-the-ball push before the Chelsea equaliser came three minutes before the break.

It was all about Drogba. Out on the left, full-back Ogogo was out-foxed and out muscled Senderos-style before Drogba waited his moment to set up Tejera from a yard out.

The first chance of the second half fell Stoch's way but went wide. Arsenal then struck the woodwork for a second time when a free-kick deflected up off the Chelsea wall and looped beyond the reach of Taylor.

On 58 minutes, Drogba was withdrawn and replaced by Fabio Paim, the new loan signing from Sporting Lisbon who took up position on the left of the front three, Sinclair moving central. At the same moment, Michael Woods came on for Tejera.

Within four minutes, the subs made a massive impact. Paim, from midway inside the Arsenal half picked out Stoch with a great diagonal ball. The Slovakian spotted a burst into the box by Woods and found him for a finish from eight yards.

Scaling the Underhill slope was proving no deterrent to the Chelsea side as a third was added on 70 minutes. Sinclair registered the goal he had been threatening when a Mellis shot was charged down but fell to the edge of the area for his colleague to slam it in under the bar.

Chelsea went post rattling just two minutes later when a Stoch free-kick was curled past the wall to make it two woodwork strikes to one in the home side's favour.

Arsenal reduced the real deficit to 3-2 and set-up a nerve-jangling finish with a free-kick into the top corner by Fonte after Magnay had fouled Simpson right on the edge of the area, a tackle for which he was booked.

The closing minutes saw Arsenal throw bodies and passes down the slope and Chelsea survived a ball across the face of goal by Simpson which evaded a forest of feet.

Then Taylor punched over well from Wilshere, a save he had to repeat before the whistle went and the reserves were able to claim their first three points from their first game of the campaign.

Chelsea Rhys Taylor; Nana Ofori-Twumasi, Jeffrey Bruma, Carl Magnay, Patrick van Aanholt; Sergio Tejera (Michael Woods 58), Liam Bridcutt, Jacob Mellis; Scott Sinclair, Didier Drogba (Fabio Paim 58), Miroslav Stoch (Ricardo Fernandes 86).

Arsenal Wojciech Szczesny; Abu Ogogo, Gavin Hoyte, Kyle Bartley, Kieran Gibbs; Jack Wilshere, Francis Coquelin (James Dunne 59), Mark Randall (Rhys Murphy), Fran Merida; Jay Simpson, Rui Fonte.

Liverpool bring in winger Riera

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 04:52 AM

Liverpool have completed the signing of left winger Albert Riera from Espanyol.

Riera, 26, has signed a four-year contract with the Anfield club and is believed to have signed for about £8m.

The Spaniard, who was also wanted by Everton, had a short spell on loan with Manchester City in 2006 and has also played for Real Mallorca and Bordeaux.

"Riera has the qualities we were looking for. He's a left footer who normally plays on the left wing," said Reds boss Benitez.

"He's good in the air, strong, powerful and a good crosser of the ball.

"He's the kind of player we have been talking about. He can beat players and get good deliveries into the area for our strikers.

606: DEBATE
ScouserSmith

"We've known about him for a long time, since he was at Mallorca and then through his career with Bordeaux, Manchester City and Espanyol

"He can talk English and of course he knows the Premier League, which is a big bonus.

"Usually foreign players need time when they go to a new country, but Riera already knows the league and the style of football.

In May, Riera was left out of Spain's Euro 2008 squad despite helping the national side qualify for the tournament.

Everton are believed to have met Espanyol's asking price for Riera but the player is understood to have favoured a move to Anfield.

Benitez added: "He also had offers from other English clubs but he said no to them because he wanted to come and play for us.

"That means a lot to me because it shows the commitment he has to play for Liverpool."

Riera's joins Liverpool following the earlier news on transfer deadline day that Steve Finnan was moving in the opposite direction for an undisclosed fee.

Striker Cousin makes Hull switch

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 04:50 AM

Premier League newcomers Hull City have completed the signing of striker Daniel Cousin from Glasgow Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

Cousin, 31, had a move to Fulham blocked by Fifa in January because he had already played for Rangers and French side Lens that season.

The Gabon international scored in Rangers' 4-2 victory over Celtic on Sunday, but was also sent off.

Cousin scored 11 goals in his 28 appearances for Rangers.

606: DEBATE
Cousin, who has also scored 17 goals in 47 matches for Gabon, signed for Rangers from Lens for £1.1m in August 2007.

Magpies sign Depor striker Xisco

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 04:46 AM

Newcastle have signed Spanish striker Xisco from Deportivo La Coruna on a five-year deal for a reported £5.7m.

The 22-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 44 games for Deportivo, will link up with former team-mate Fabricio Coloccini at St James' Park.

Xisco, who was also linked with a move to Aston Villa, spent the 2006/07 season on loan at Spanish second division side UD Vecindario.

The forward will wear the Magpies number 19 shirt.

"It is a great feeling to be here and to have signed for Newcastle," Xisco told the club's website.
