Chelsea over Sunderland

Tuesday, 18 August 09, 02:21 AM

John Terry's confident claim that Chelsea have emerged from the summer break stronger than their top four rivals will be severely tested at Sunderland. Tough fixture. That’s all that really needs to be said about today’s trip to Sunderland.

Blues skipper Terry has spoken confidently about the club’s title chances this season after seeing the Premier League’s other leading teams lose key players while Carlo Ancelotti’s squad has remained largely untouched.

Bolton Wanderers could be without Jamaica international Ricardo Gardner for up to a month.

The defender was a late withdrawal from the squad that lost at home to Sunderland on Saturday with a hamstring injury, and manager Gary Megson has confirmed that Gardner could miss the first four matches of the season.

That is an added blow for Megson, who is already looking for striking re-enforcements. Source 1

Blackburn vs Manchester City Match Reports

Tuesday, 18 August 09, 01:17 AM

Manchester City launched themselves into what they hope will be a golden era with a victory at Blackburn Rovers that answered many of the questions that have been asked of them over the summer.

Emmanuel Adebayor set them on their way, lashing home Shaun Wright-Phillips' cut-back after just three minutes. Then, with stoppage time approaching and City looking likely to hold onto the lead provided by their £25m new-boy, Stephen Ireland popped up to fire home after a mazy solo burst.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis is chasing five new signings before the end of the transfer window.

The Potters began their second successive Barclays Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over newcomers Burnley on Saturday but Pulis is keen to strengthen his squad.

So far he has brought in only midfielder Dean Whitehead from Sunderland but is hopeful plenty of business can be done in the next fortnight.

Roberto Martinez has no problem with Paul Scharner and is keen to keep the versatile player at Wigan Athletic.

Scharner raised doubts over his future at the weekend after warning the Latics he could leave if he does not play in his preferred position of central midfield.

Martinez employed Scharner in central defence in Saturday's win against Aston Villa and the Latics chief says the Austrian will play where is best for the team.
