It does drag on the whole summer saga of nothingness that is the transfer rumour. The same stories seem to keep being regurgitated and then spun a slightly different way. I've just listened to a podcast from Radio 5 and they've managed to spend 50 minutes discussing (in the loosest sense of the word) the rumours, the possible rumours and the complete bollocks. The fact that the so-called experts were a journalist, a player released by Reading and on trial at Southampton and an agent! Their opinions were just a series of bland statements and clichés that today pass for expert knowledge. I'm pretty sure that a few ole ole bloggers in a pub one evening would come up with something more interesting. What the agent and the journalist use as their "tactic" is the use of a phrase such as "I was talking to someone at United" or "I bumped into a scout at City" etc as if this immediately justifies their statement as the TRUTH! Oh well it was something to listen to as I cooked dinner.
I'm beginning to see the point (even if it is all tongue in cheek) of the Guardian's daily email, "The Fiver", and its STOP FOOTBALL campaign. In the summer there are so many other sports (and sportsmen and women) who still cannot get the media's attention because of its infatuation with football, even when there are no bleeding games being played.
Oh well I'm off to watch the cricket highlights and then the Tour de France highlights, where some actual sport is being played and there is a lot less crap spoken.
If there is a God our French players will have the summer off.
