Finally the leagues are starting....if not all

Saturday, 09 August 08, 04:30 PM

Strangely the Swiss League has been going for over three weeks so far, so it was good to hear about some rather better supported (no offence Axpo Super League) games beginning this weekend. Today saw the start of both Ligue 1 and all of the Football Leagues. So finally the main French Sports paper, L'Equipe, can concentrate more on action and less on rumour. PSG started as though last season had never ended with defeat at Monaco (despite new signings Makelele and Giuly). The seven times winners , Lyon, begin their defence tomorrow, playing Toulouse.

Basel continued their scoring form with a 4-0 home win, maintaining their second place (with a game in hand) behind Aarau. Hopefully they can keep it up in the Champions League game.

Brief again tonight - too much red wine and recovering from the party last night.....

Wandering into France today I discovered...

Saturday, 19 July 08, 08:08 AM

that L'Equipe is convinced that Makele is leaving Chelsea (who are spending £80M on Kaka - so how's Kenyon's "we're going to break even by 2010 theory doing now then) to join PSG, who seem to be attempting to become a home for ageing ex-French internationals. Depending on his heart problem then they may even get Lilian Thuram as well. The biggest surprise of these stories is that it pushed the Tour De France of the front page and, therefore, denying Mark Cavendish yet another headline photograph!

Ex-Arsenal loanee Baptista is apparently not staying fro much longer at Real Madrid and is off to sunny Rome to join Roma. It's not that good for another old Arsenal player at Rennes, Sylvain Wiltord - who is not flavour of the month with his coach.

Meanwhile, here in Switzerland, the Super League kicked off last night with a 2-1 victory for last season's champions, FC Basel, over the runners up, Young Boys. Basel came from behind to start the season perfectly.

It's All "Le Tour" and Strawberries & Cream - so here's an Arsenal Video

Saturday, 05 July 08, 04:45 AM

Yep L'Equipe is, as of today, officially the Tour de France newspaper and so there is limited news on the football front. If you get past that the Swiss press are concentrating on their two heroes, Roger Federer and Fabio Cancellara - sorry if you've never heard of them.

However, digging past that I've found the odd snippet of football information/rumour/gossip. L'Equipe asks if Makele is going to return to PSG, Calderon & Gill are to meet to discuss him plus other bits (zzzz).

20 Minuten links their coverage of Euro2008 to a new managerial appointment in England, as their ex-pundit Roberto Di Matteo becomes manager of MK Dons, following on from Paul Ince. Also some Swiss player I've never heard of has returned from Aston Villa to play for FC Vaduz in the Axpo Super League. Strange team, FC Vaduz, as they are actually based in Liechtenstein, which doesn't have enough teams for a proper league so plays in the Swiss Leagues!

Oh and here's that Arsenal Video montage of Highbury to the Emirates>>>
