Modric and Palacios

Friday, 09 October 09, 06:27 AM · Comments(41)

A feeling I’m sure my old mother was subjected to when watching me pick up a fifty-meter swimming badge back in primary school- looking on fondly as one of her own dropped, sans grace, into a vat of partially diluted chlorine, swallowing an unhealthy dose of it, before emerging, half-drowned at the other end like a dog being rescued from a river- I was awash with a certain amount pride this week after discovering that esteemed members of our own stock, Luka Modric and Wilson Palacios, had earned themselves a place on FourFourTwo’s, frankly excellent, ‘100 Best Players in the World’ list 2009. Swanning their way in (how very dare they) among the head diners at 61st and 93rd, respectively. In the words of piano-tie inventing, fashion warlord, Mugatu:

 They’re so hot right now.

Of course, the rankings are fairly subjective- for my money, they’d both be higher- but it’s encouraging that their luminous talents are being appreciated on a global stage; particularly Palacios, who, last season was earning his crust at Wigan Athletic, now finds himself wedged between Ruud Van Nistlerooy and boss-eyed-man-wolf, Ryan Giggs. His reputation is soaring skyward.

So, where Sergeant Wilson, a relative newcomer and new entry, finds himself on the lower rungs of the stepladder, it’s the effervescent Croat who wriggles his way through business class and nearer the buffet table; outranking the likes of Ronaldinho, Carlos Tevez and, wait for it, Klass Jan-Huntelaar. Our wanton summer holiday fling. Ex-Spurs strikers Berbatov and Kanoute came in at a close run, annoyingly lofty 43rd and 44th.  But, sadly, I have it on great authority that the former punched a kitten in the face. So he’s out.

Shame, really.

Well done to the Luka and Wilson, then. Two stars that are shimmering with some vigour out the moment. Let’s just hope we find the right gloves to keep hold of them.

Because I’m growing awfully attached.

Fox in the-internet-Box.

Sounds like a charming ensemble. Perhaps an FA Cup k'cheif to round off the look.

Even it's not as 'en-vogue' as it once was, I think it would look lovely.

I don't think keeping hold of them should be a huge problem in January, considering we've got 3 of the so called big four (with one scalp duly taken) out of the way they're are plenty of points (and pints) to be had between now and January. I think we could still be peeking over the top 4 wall if not straddling it by then thus our favourite boys should want to complete the good job they've started. Or am I being overly optimistic coz its Friday afternoon and I'm goin on the piss all weekend? Hope not.

That's the crux of this whole season isn't it. We're a very expensive club as is now - hardly a bargain in comparison to most of the other PL clubs but then again alot of the hard work has already been done. So your average billionaire sheikhermuppers will probaly be looking more at the spammers than a big club like Spurs ;)

Given that it's unlikely that the sky4 are going to suddenly suffer financial haemorrage, plus the middle-eastlands and others, we'll be completely out of the races unless we actually make it this time round.

I've not been so on edge since lasagna-gate. Still we could be lucky and so a Wolfsburg or have a Sampadoria style renaissance after years of little expectation :?

We need to:

1) keep winning so we are well placed for CL slot.

2) strengthen in January so: a) we don't weaken and fade Villa style; b)keep winning so we are well placed for CL slot.

3) not sell our players so: a) we don't strengthen our rivals; b) we don't weaken and fade Villa style; c)keep winning so we are well placed for CL slot.

Simple really.

Look at the Portsmouth fiasco or Newcastle or Liverpool. We only want owners who REALLY care about our club and love or hate Lewis and Levy they have in the main acted responsibly. Week after week I see people ranting on about rich Russians and Arabs but what happens when they get bored ?

Man U were almost the richest club in the World with loads of cash before the Glazers charged in now they are £700,000,000 in debt. We are one of the most profitable clubs in the World and have been for years so if this season does not bring us the CL there will always be next season.

As for the top four, not long ago they were the top three and before that they were the top two, the only constant thing in life is change and the top of the EPL will also change.

We are enjoying one of our best starts in years there is really no need to look for negatives
