The Owen Gamble

Day 3,073 in the Big Brother house….

A hearty bon soir to all of you in internet land; I hope these words finds you well. Unfortunately I’m still wrestling with a few gremlins here at Fox HQ, namely the stark absence of a modem and a steady connection. Sadly, the news around these parts relies exclusively on my weekly subscription of the Beano and the paranoid ramblings of the man of the bus. Who smells a bit ripe.

Good people, for the time being, my finger is off the pulse. Even more so than usual.

Mustn’t grumble, though- I’m sure there have been greater struggles endured since the dawn of time. Just the other day I saw someone in the supermarket carrying their shopping by hand because Sainsbury’s had run out of carrier bags. If you can imagine.

Right, let’s steady the wagon and get back on track. What’s been happening then? I shall fight the urge to type ‘f*ck all’ as I’m sure most of you are aware that transfer window is moving pretty slowly for Spurs at the moment without me confirming the fact.

*deep breath*

The big news, of course, is that Gareth Bale is wanted on a season loan at Birmingham. Let that sink in. Then fight the urge to go back to bed and spend the rest of the day with the curtains closed. Because that’s your lot.

On Friday, after reeling from the shock of this story, I was having a little ponder about the Owen transfer. Earlier in the week Big Sam of Lancashire had suggested, reasonably, that the perma-crocked striker was too big a risk for a manager of his ilk and position; too much woodworm in the joints for any unstable club to invest time and money into. Blackburn, Stoke, Hull et al, all teams unwilling to throw bags of cash at a glorified (treatment) table-cloth.

Seemingly, it was a no-brainer.

However, now that United (a team who could certainly afford to take a risk) have offered Owen a golden ticket out of the barren wasteland of Championship football, it seems like the best idea since bottle opener flip-flops. A masterstroke. Genius.

‘Hmm, I dunno Scoob.’

Now that the deal has gone through, it kind of feels like we’ve all missed a trick here. Like the carpet has been thrust from under us. It needed the seal of approval from Sir Alex and we’d forget all about the injury clad years at Newcastle and remember him at his puckish, goal scoring best. ‘Hang-on, so why didn’t we sign him then?’ might be a question put forward in coming weeks. ‘I mean, he’ll guarantee you goals, wont he?’

‘Won’t he?’

Michael?’

Will Spurs be one of those clubs? Ruing the day we didn’t take a gamble on a proven Premiership goal scorer who’ll undoubtedly bag a drawer full next term? Were we in a position to take the risk?

My opinion, based on a few things, is no thanks.

Firstly, we have enough aerially impotent midgets in our forward-line. We don’t need another.

Secondly, I don’t like the idea of buying second-hand tat from Newcastle; particularly of a certain age. If you buy from a shit team, it’s more than likely you could end up one yourself. Isn’t that how osmosis works?

And finally… he’d be a bit of a gamble, wouldn’t he?

In other news, the most successful boss Spurs ever had, Bill Nicholson, was ranked 10th in a list of all-time managers in British football history; a list compiled by FourFourTwo magazine, August edition. It’s a great feature which I suggest you make great efforts to seek out. It’s possibly up on their website.

Sadly, Christian Gross wasn’t ranked.

Such is life.

From the bunker.

Foxy,
Finger on the pulse, I doubt if you could find one. Even the Citeh and Real 'financial defibrillator' has failed to shock the football 'body' back to life. Can't wait for the season to begin, fed up of all the regurgitated media b.s.
As for Owen, it's a gamble which few apart from red-nose could afford to take. We have enough sick-notes, some hungry, talented and fit young men are what we require imo.

I was hoping we would take a gamble on Owen. Although he looks to have passed his sell by date, infront of the right midfield he could still be devastating. He has always reminded me of Gary Lineker, a poacher. I have a feeling he'll get 10-15 at ManUre and find himself back in the England squad for the World Cup.

owen is a totally different type of player then tevez yes he will score goals but will he lift the team when they are struggling? i don't think so ,and thats what united have lost the hammers know what an impact tevez had for them. Its a big loss for them and a big bonus for everyone else

United were the only club willing and stable enough to take a punt on Owen. It's a win-win signing for them which will be added to with other good players. If Spurs bought him we'd be too reliant on him being fit and on form.

SAF was in a position to dictate wages in exchange for CL football. Something which looked unlikely last week.

Keep up the good work, Fox. :o

I agree, SS.

The last thing we need is to be labelled as a dumping ground for the great un-washed.

Anderton, Redknapp, King...

The list need not get any longer.

We don't need another tiny little striker. Especially when we already have tiny little JD, who has the poacher's instict, ala Owen, and adds a bit more pace. So that box is ticked. Tiny little PSB handles the yelling , non-scoring part of being constantly on the pitch. So, another box ticked.

No room for Mickey.

Here's praying that Mickey's helicopter to work doesn't, accidentally, fall on the rest of his team mates. As I said, here's praying... :)

Non-scoring is a vital attribute of the modern striker's game. :P

Nicky Butt will be devastated. How will he cope?
