Wolves are now six points clear of Birmingham at the top

A goal in each half ensured Wolves moved six points clear at the top of the Championship with a comfortable victory against Barnsley.

Kevin Foley and Andy Keogh missed early chances before Bobby Hassell diverted the ball into his net after Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller missed a cross.

Barnsley improved after the break, Jamie Cureton and Maceo Rigters missing the target with close-range headers.

But Foley made the game safe with a late strike from just inside the area.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"I said to the players when we saw those really wonderful performances a few weeks ago that it wouldn't be like that every week.

"We could have put the game to bed earlier than we did but they had some good chances and caused us problems.

"You just have to win, whether it's good, bad or indifferent, and we have had some breaks today.

Keogh and Ebanks-Blake celebrate Wolves' third against Derby

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake grabbed a brace as Wolves made light of top scorer Chris Iwelumo's absence to return to winning ways against midlands rivals Derby.

Iwelumo was a late omission because of a slight ankle injury, but Ebanks-Blake took just a minute to score from the spot after Darren Powell's handball.

The striker then hit a post before David Edwards's volley made it two.

And Ebanks-Blake wrapped up the scoring when he tapped into an empty net from Andy Keogh's squared pass.

Derby manager Paul Jewell on conceding an early penalty:

"I think it is a terrible decision to be perfectly honest. Even their players were saying it wasn't a penalty. It is just the kind of start you don't need.

"If it has hit his (Darren Powell's) hand, then there is no intent. But we haven't had too many good refereeing decisions this season.

"All we can do is just keep going and hope it turns around for us."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"With us it always seems to be a response to something. To me there was no added significance.

"We went to QPR and didn't play particularly well for 50 minutes or so, but I don't think there was any drop in our confidence or belief in our ability to come bouncing back. We just played another game.

"If every time we win one or lose a match we go up or down, then it is a recipe for disaster. You have to keep an even keel."

QPR's Dexter Blackstock challenges Wolves' Michael Mancienne

A stunning 20-yard strike from Martin Rowlands earned QPR victory over Championship leaders Wolves.

Mick McCarthy, manager of the month in November, saw his 27-goal strikeforce of Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake blunted.

Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made a number of crucial saves but could do nothing to stop Rowlands' dipping shot.

Sam Vokes was denied an equaliser by a Radek Cerny save and QPR's Samuel Di Carmine shaved a post in stoppage time.

QPR manager Paulo Sousa:
"It was a great performance but more importantly we needed three points. I'm proud of the players, they are working very hard and they have beaten the team at the top of the league.

"When you have time to work with the players the team becomes better, and you could see that in this game. But our next two games are away, where our performances have not been so good.

"But if my team create as many chances as they did today then we will start to score goals away."

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"This has been a tough place to play for as long as I can remember, and they are fired up by the fact that we are top and they have a new manager.

"We are the top team in this division - I'm not saying we're the best, but we are top - and that inspires other teams to play against you and we have got to live with that.

"We are still top. We didn't play well for 50 minutes today but we did play well for 35 minutes and we just could not get a goal back."

4 min Jaidi, under extreme pressure, does well to divert a right-wing cross from Kightly away from goal.

6 min McFadden has a goal disallowed for offside after he collected Hunt's diagonal pass and tucked it past Hennessey from eight yards. It was extremely tight, but it was also just about the right decision. Or maybe not: the more I see that the more I think he was onside. Bent, further along the line, was definitely offside, but he wasn't active.

13 min Ridgewell hits his own post. A long throw from the left from Ward bounced once and kicked up around the six-yard line and Ridgewell, under pressure from Ebanks-Blake, headed it off the near post. He didn't really know anything that: it zipped onto his head like a good-length delivery in cricket that hits a crack and takes off. "Ridgewell man... mmmm... loves to score own-goals...Subway food...you gonna open that Tizer?" mumbles Tom Lutz between mouthfuls of lunch.

17 min At the other end, Stearman clears off the line to deny Birmingham. Marcus Bent, possibly offside, ran onto a long diagonal pass from the right and got clear on goal. The keeper Hennessey came to the edge of the box to meet him, so Bent just lobbed it over him, but Stearman had kept running past his keeper and was able to clear it off the line.

Half time: Wolves 0-0 Birmingham A decent half ends goalless. Birmingham were the better side but Wolves did hit the post, albeit through Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell. They will feel they can only play better in the second half, and that will be a concern for Birmingham.

47 min A free-kick is launched into the Wolves box and, after a bit of pinball, Jaidi welts it into orbit from the edge of the box. Boom!

GOAL! Wolves 0-1 Birmingham (Jerome 48) The substitute Cameron Jerome scores within three minutes of coming on. It came from a mistake by Richard Stearman, who tried to head a long punt forward back to his keeper but who left it horribly short. Jerome took it on, raced to the edge of the box and, with Mancienne up his backside and Stearman sliding in front of him, struck a shot that hit the leg of Stearman, from where it ricocheted into the ground and then up and over the diving Hennessey. There was fortune in the finish, but Birmingham fully deserve to be ahead.

56 min Wolves make their first substitution: Michael Gray off, Andy Keogh on. He goes to the right wing with, I presume, Kightly switching left.

57 min Wolves are all over Birmingham like a cheap one at the moment. Stearman beats two men and drills one in from 20 yards. Taylor makes a rudimentary save.

63 min Another Wolves sub: Sam Vokes replaces Iwelumo.

71 min Wolves are about to make their final substitution: David Jones off, David Edwards on.

GOAL! Wolves 1-1 Birmingham (Ebanks-Blake 74) Wolves equalise. The left-back Ward plays a really good one-two with Kightly, beats Jaidi with unfathomable ease and then pulls it back to the near post for Ebanks-Blake to sidefoot coolly into the far corner from eight yards. From Wolves' point of view it's a clean, slick goal, but Jaidi really should have taken man, ball and everything else when Ward ran onto Kightly's return pass.

Full time: Wolves 1-1 Birmingham A fair result. Birmingham were much the better in the first half, deservedly taking the lead in the 48th minute through their menacing substitute Cameron Jerome, but Wolves were aided by some aggressive, proactive substitutions, and built up enough of a head of steam to deserve the excellent Sylvain Ebanks-Blake's equaliser. So they stay six points clear of Birmingham.
