Germany could be without central defender Jens Nowotny for the World Cup 2002.
Nowotny twisted his right knee eight minutes into the Champions League semi-final Tuesday between Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester United.
"We'll have to see how much the ligaments are damaged, whether they are torn," Leverkusen's physiotherapist Dieter Trzolek said. "But it looks very much like a tear."
Trzolek said Nowotny would undergo more tests on Thursday.
Germany already has lost creative midfielder Mehmet Scholl, who is not fit enough for the tournament following a series of injuries
