I had to alert people beforehand that this post might generate some controversy and some might even dislike what I'm going to say but it's all based on personal opinion and
YOU ARE ALSO ENTITLED TO POST
YOURS.
So let's get to the point.
A-Rod is not happy in Boston.
Amy Rodriguez was with all merit the number 1 draft of the WPS and everybody expected her to be shining just like she did while playing for USC and for the
US WNT. She was decisive in the Olympics. And actually participated in the play that generated Carli Lloyd's goal. So what happened? W
hy isn't she playing like we were used to see her playing? Why has she been sitting on the bench more often than not?
Well, those are questions that only coach DiCicco and Amy herself could answer but I can write some possible theories.
After the LA Sol match against the Boston Breakers at the Home Depot Center I said Hi to A-Rod and asked her how she was. She said everything was okay but she missed her friends and family in California. That's all. She was extremely professional and didn't complain about being on the bench or anything related to the team. But I felt a hint of dissatisfaction in her voice. I could be wrong but i've been playing, coaching and working with soccer long enough to notice that she didn't look very happy.
A striker is the one responsible to FINISH the plays, period. Abby Wambach, Natasha Kai, Christine Sinclair (CAN), Eriko Arakawa (JPN), Birgit Prinz (GER), Cristiane (BRA). They play most of the time as a target woman inside the other team's box. They score goals. That's their main job.
Forwards can be played as second strikers if they can also finish well, if they are tall and strong but they might also be the ones that open space to the sides so the striker can penetrate into the box through the middle.
Most women's teams have more forwards than strikers. Kelly Smith is originally a forward that can be moved to the "second striker" position. Marta is a forward and so is Amy Rodriguez.
She's incredibly fast and can cross the ball really well from either side of the field. She takes on defenders leaving them in the dust and that forces someone else to cover opening space for the striker to be free in the box.
Pia Sundhage knows that. Tony DiCicco apparently doesn't.
Amy can score too. She can score coming from one side of the box, cutting to the middle and she can shoot with either the right or left foot. I've seen her doing that playing for
USC many times but I've also seen her, most of the times, putting her teammates in front of the goal after leaving defenders behind her.
I know that Boston's offense play around Kelly Smith and I don't expect it to be different. I also know that Kristine Lilly is very good playing on the right wing. So, why not play Amy on the left wing on the attack and have one of the midfielders covering for her defensively?
Just a suggestion Mr. DiCicco.
I actually would rather have Amy benched in Boston for the rest of the season and then see her coming back to Cali next year on a transfer either for the Sol or Gold Pride. Can you imagine an attack with A-Rod, Han Duan and Marta? or A-Rod, Christine Sinclair and Tiffeny Milbret? WOW!!!
Anyway...

i think she might be un happy cause shes being bench a bit, i also personally think that she should get a lot more playing time. she deserves it , i would also hate to see her out of boston. I think boston fans wouldn't be too happy if she left boston. ether but some thime ya got to do what ya got to do.
I agree mostly with what you said, Gil. The adjustment period is difficult, but most other players have coped. Her personality might make it more difficult for her, and she is across the country.
She obviously isn't happy being benched either, but she she hasn't been producing at her normal level. Is this related to the adjustment factor? Maybe, but I think it also has to do with how she is being played, like you said. It is a combination of factors.
And oyur explanation of forwards vs. strikers. Yes! Thank you.
Either way, I can see her being traded if she is unhappy. Happiness is the key to productivity. It will be useless to have such a talented player just sulking around Beantown not knowing what do with herself.
All the best, A-rod. I hope she rediscovers her form soon and proves us (and Tony) all wrong.
Agreed he is not playing her properly! Watching the game yesterday I kept thinking he should put her wide and bringing on nobis for her are u kidding!? Nobis looked poor vs w-league/wpsl teams let alone wps players. Of course I don't think Hucles is playing the right position either he needs a real d-mid not an attacking personality converted.
She should be playing on the left wing. she has the speed for it. Remember the goal she assisted in the friendly against China at the HDC (achieve your gold tour, dec. 13)? That was perfect. The way she totally outran China's D, and was able to get a perfect cross to Ellertson. That was a good play by a-rod. It would be nice to see her playing more like that. It would be great for Kelly Smith too :)
I guess I should stop now, I already agreed with you last time we talked about Amy.
I absolutely, 100% agree with you. Rodriguez is a fantastic player that should be getting more playing time. I understand that DiCicco is trying to use her in a different way than Sundhage does, but if he expects results, perhaps he shouldn't be pressing her to play a position where she doesn't get opportunities to do what she's good at, which is running at defenses and creating chances. I honestly think the root of the issue is the change in position, or the change in the role A-Rod is expected to play on the field for Boston. I also agree with soc20 on the subject of Hucles: she was virtually invisible on Sunday from that position. WIth the offensive firepower they have, Boston should be steamrolling people: it's just not being used properly. As much as I hate to doubt a coach of his calibre, I can't help but wonder what he's thinking with some of these line-ups.
And I'd LOVE to second your comment about the weather being a factor when it comes to mood: I live in New York, and the gloomy weather really puts a damper on my state of mind. I can understand how a player used to warm California weather could be miserable in a place like Boston.
All in all, though, keep pushing through, A-Rod! We believe in you, you're a wonderful player, and things will get better.
Why is everyone so afraid to say something bad about DiCicco? I don't think he's some kind of god or something. Some people say that Mourinho is the Special One, and some call him something else. And he's way more successful/ well-known than DiCicco.
It's his team, and he can do what he wants, but I don't think he's that great myself. I just remember his commentating during a game, and thinking, this fellow is quite negative. I don't think his leadership is anything special and he certainly lacks imagination. Just compare his body language to the "interim" manager for New Jersey and his on Sunday. You could tell who wanted it more, and most importantly, who did a better job of conveying that to his/her team.
