Africa Cup of Nations

The MTN Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) in Ghana 2008 showcased the best African teams and talent in a tournament that has provided great entertainment over the years. The Africa Cup of Nations is very important to most Africans, and despite it being in the middle of the European club season, it is well-attended by the best African players in the world. The stars of 2008 were be Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Kolo and Yaya Toure, Obafemi Martins, Mickael Essien and many, many more.

African Cup of Nations – Mid-season Madness!

Whilst the Euro and World Cup take place in the summer, the fact that the African Cup of Nations is played in the middle of most major European club seasons is something that is quite curious. It’s the subject of much irritation for many European clubs and managers, and often even for players, as it’s also the time when the transfer window takes place. The reason for this odd timing is a legacy of the days without floodlights. Since teams had to play during the day, the searing African heat made it impossible to have a decent tournament unless it was in January/February, when the continent was at its coolest, and so that’s why the CAN is played at this time. However, because of floodlights, the games could now technically be played at night, when it’s cooler, and this is done in many African club competitions. The African Cup of Nations however sticks stubbornly to its roots, although this may change in the future.
