Club Overview

The club is named for Bernardo O'Higgins, a hero of Chile's war for independence and the second Supreme Director of Chile.

Club History

The year was 1954, and the promotion championship was followed with great interest in Rancagua. The city’s two teams, the yellow-wearing America de rancagua and the white and greon of O’Higgins Braden were fighting for the top position of the tournament, and the city’s supremacy became evident after Braden was crowned champion, followed by America.

Both teams had earned a place in the Primera División for the 1955 tournament, but the Central Football Asociation decided that both teams should merge into a new club that would represent the whole city.

The decision on this new club’s colors, along with the new president, were both randomly made. Since there was an equal number of former America and Braden members on the assembly, the Central Association president Carlos Dittborn decided that flipping a coin would be the only way to solve this problem. And so, the first president of O’Higgins was elected: Francisco Rajcevich.

Regarding the club colors, the initial thought was to go with red shirt, blue shorts and white socks, but the Association ruled against it, cause no clubs can wear the same uniform as the national team. Light blue was unused at the time by the other clubs in the tournament, so it seemed like the perfect choice.

On the first team, notable players were the goalkeeper Carlos Bustos (the best goalkeeper in the club’s history) and top striker Juvenal Soto.
