Copa America Overview
The Copa America is held once every four years. All ten teams part of the CONMEBOL automatically enter into the competition, and two invited teams compete for the prestigious trophy in a knock out competition. The competition is usually held between June and July.

Qualification Process
There is no qualification process for the Copa America. All ten teams from the CONMEBOL compete by right. Two other teams are invited to play in the competition. The U.S National Soccer Team is one the teams that often gets invited to play in the tournament.
Qualification Requirements
In order for a football team to play in the competition they must either be a member of the CONMEBOL federation or get an invitation to play.
Copa America Format
The Copa America is held in a knockout round format. The tournament starts out in group stages, with 3 groups and 4 teams per group. Ten of the teams are part of the CONMEBOL and 2 of them are invited.
For the first stage each team plays one match against each of the other teams within the same group. Two points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat. First and second placed teams, in each group, advance to the quarter-finals. The best third placed team and the second best third placed team, also advance to the quarter-finals.
The best third place teams plays second place team and the second best third place team plays the second place teams. The winner of each advances to the semi-final. The winner of the semi-final advances to the final.
Location and Venues
The competition is held all through out South America. Uruguay has hosted the competition 9 times, most out an country. The most recent host of the Copa America in 2007 was Venezuela.
