The Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU) is one of the most successful teams in Ecuador having won 9 national titles. The Liga has participated in various occasions in international championships such as the Copa Libertadores de America and the Copa Sud-americana. La Liga Deportiva Universitaria was founded on January 12, 1930 by a group of students and professionals at the Universidad Central of Ecuador. La Liga is one of the most popular teams in Quito; it was the football club that contributed more players to the Ecuadorian National Football Team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup with 7 players: The goalkeeper Cristian Mora, the defenders Neicer Reasco, Gioavanny Espinoza, Paul Ambrossi, Patricio Urrutia, Agustin Delgado and the former midfielder Edison Mendez who was transferred to PSV Eindhoven. In 2004 the Liga Deportiva Universitaria conquered the 3rd place at the Copa Sud-americana.
