Memorable historic moments for the Italian National Team
The Italian National Team played its first match on May 10th 1910 in Milan, defeating France by a score of 6-2. Italy won its first World Cup in 1934 in Rome, defeating Czechoslavkia
in the finals, with the help of captain and striker Guiseppe Meazza. In the following World Cup, Italy defeated Hungry in the finals, winning its second consecutive World Cup. It took the team
another 32 years in order to become successful on the world stage once again. Azzurri became the runner up of the 1970 World Cup, loosing to
Brazil in the finals. The teams cost recent success came in 2006, as they defeated their rival France in the final, as Italy scored all 5 penalty
kicks, for the first time in history. The goalkeeper
Gianluigi Buffon was awarded the Lev Yashin goalkeeper of the tournament award, for only
allowing 2 goals during the whole tournament.
