The Uhrencup is an international football tournament held annually in Grenchen, Switzerland. Since 1962 it held annually in July at the
Stadium Brühl in Grenchen. The
Uhren Cup is a pre-season tournament and is considered the most important tournament in
Switzerland.
The
Uhrencup organizer is the Swiss club FC Grenchen, a Swiss Liga 1 club. The winner in 2007 was the Swiss club BSC Young Boys. The next competition is being held from 08. - 12. July 2008. The competing clubs are:
The four-way tournament usually features
Basel and
BSC Young Boys of Berne and in 2007 included
Celtic FC who used the Uhren Cup to improve player fitness levels and to bed in new players.
The 1962 FC Grenchen the new grandstand inaugurated and the watch-making entrepreneurs in the Grenchen agreed that the new stadium grandstand in Brühl should host a football tournament to celebrate. So FC Grenchen, then one of the leading teams in Switzerland, organised the other leading teams in the
Swiss football league and bordering country clubs, and held a big inaugural tournament with international teams. The response was so great that the Uhrencup has been repeated annually.
