FIFA World Cup 2006 Overview

The FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany was the 18th edition of the competition. 32 countries battled for the title of best football nation in the world. In the end France reached their second World Cup Final in previous three editions but it was Italy that lifted the trophy for the fourth time.

The group stages of the 2006 World Cup didn’t show a lot of surprises with the big and usual favourites - Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Italy moving to the round of 16 without lots of problems. Ghana and Australia that secured the second spots in groups E and F respectively and Switzerland finishing first in group G ahead of France were the surprises of the first phase of the World Cup 2006 in Germany.

Portugal was elected the most entertaining team of the World Cup and finished in fourth place after losing the third place match to host nation Germany. Lukas Podolski received the award for Best Young Player, five goals gave Miroslav Klose the Golden Shoe for top scorer but it was an image,
created by the player who won the Golden Ball as the Best of the competition, Zinedine Zidane, that will always be the unforgettable image of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
