About Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund was founded on December 19 1909 by a group of young men. The club started to really gain popularity during next decade, as they played out of Stadion Rote Erde. During the 1930s and 40s, under the emergence of Nazi Germany, the team did well, winning many competitions. Borussia Dortmund won its first national title in 1956. They became one of the founding teams of the Bundesliga, the German Premier League, in 1963, and won their first professional title in 1965. The club's success on the European stage came a year later as they won the European Cup Winners Cup. As a result of their success, the club constructed Signal Iduna Park, in order to host their growing fan base. Throughout the seventies and eighties, the team struggled to win championships. However, in the 1990's Borussia Dortmund again became a top competitor, as they won the UEFA Cup in 1997. From the start of the new millennium till present day the team has been struggling to do well. However, with player such as Roman Weidenfeller they might be able to come back to the top.
