The Geek National Team is the football team that represents the country of Greece and is controlled by the Hellenic Football Federation. Even though the Hellenic Federation has been part of FIFA since 1927, the Greek team only began to gain certain notoriety in the 1980’s when they participated for the first time in the European Nations Championship. The team had a total of 3 appearances in the continental competition but it was in 2004 that they achieved ultimate glory winning the title for the surprise of the whole Europe. Football in Greece, as in many countries of the world, is the most popular sport. The local teams, especially Olympiacos and Panathinaikos attract thousands of fans to the stadiums, especially after Greece’s European title. The Greek national teams rival is the Turkish National Team. Over the years legends such as Angelos Basinas, Georgios Seitaridis , and Antonios Nikopolidis have worn Greece's national kits. Otto Rehhagel has been the Greek National Team's head coach ever since 2001, when he won a football tournament in Portugal. For the Euro 2008 they will be competing in group D along with tough competitors, Spain and Sweden.
1994 World Cup – a humiliation for Greece
The Greek National Soccer Team’s endeavor to win the FIFA World Cup ended up in a huge disaster. At the beginning of the tournament there were high expectations from Greek supports, as the Greek National Football Team that went undefeated in the qualifying rounds. The team competed in the same group as Argentina, Bulgaria and Nigeria, and lost to all three opponents. Greece was eliminated on the first round of the competition, not scoring one single goal and allowing 10 goals. This was one of the worst performances in all of international soccer history.
