Coppa Italia

The Coppa Italia, or Italian Cup, is considered be one of the least prestigious trophies in Italian football. The competition is sponsored by the Italian cell phone service provider TIM, which is the reason for competition being officially named the TIM Cup. The tournament is known for its low attendance, with some teams only getting as much as 30,000 fans attending the games.

The Coppa Italia is held once a year, with 42 club teams from Serie B, and the Italian premier league Serie A , from all over Italy competing for the title. The tournament is held in three phases, with the final one leg fixtures held at a neutral venue. The most recent club team to win the TIM Cup is AS Roma,, as they beat Inter Milan 2-1, with Mexes and Perrotta scoring the two winning goals.

Coppa Italia - One of the oldest competitions in Italy

The Coppa Italia is one of the oldest running competitions in Europe. The tournament was first held in 1922 with FC Vado defeating Udinese Calcio FC, in order to win the very first title. The next time the competition was held 1935, with Torino FC winning the competition. AS Roma is the most success out of any Italian football club with 9 titles and 7 runner ups. Juventus is second behind them with a total of 9 titles and 4 runner ups. Over the years the Coppa Italia has featured Italian superstars such as AS Roma superstar player Francisco Totti and Juventus FC starAlessandro Del Piero.

The reason for the tournament's lack of importance is because the competition is not exclusive to the premier division league Serie A teams. Most of the premier teams which participate in the competition bring their second string players to compete against Serie B teams in the tournament.
