Club Overview

Torino Football Club, or simply called Torino, founded in 1906 and based in Turin, Piedmont. The Italian club, wears red maroon shirts (and white shorts, sometimes maroon) at home game, -the reason why it’s also called II Granata (The Maroon). Another nickname is II Toro or The Bull (because of its logo, which is capturing a bull on it). Maybe today, it seems that Torino doesn’t really have much to tell, -looking at its role in Italian Serie A these decades, but surely, there’re still a long story about it. Torino, have won Serie A, Italian top division seven times, first in 1927–28 and most recently in 1975–76. Five of those were winning by the legendary "Grande Torino" (Great Torino), the best squad that Torino have had, also believed as the best ever team in Italian football history. The other titles Torino have won are Italian domestic Cup (called “Coppa Italia”), which the team won five times. Completed with 3 titles of Serie B champions, 1 title of Mitropa Cup, and some youth champion titles.

Club History

FOUNDED FootBall Club Torino was founded on 3 December 1906, as the conclusion of a meeting between people, -including some men from Juventus [who left the club because of an inequality visions problem], and also Hans Schoenbrod, a businessman, later known as Torino’s first chairman- which was held in Via Pietro Micca, Turin. First championship noted in the history of Torino F.C. is Torneo Internazionale Stampa Sportiva in Turin (1908). The tournament was held by an Italian magazine called La Stampa Sportiva. Unfortunately, Torino reached the final just to be beaten by Servette. 3-1 is the final scores that night. Next big step, Torino won its first title, which was also first Scudetto, in 1927/1928 season. Then, after quite a long time, 15 years, the club reached its glorious era, started with a scudetto in 1942/1943 season (second title), then continued with 4 more, consecutively from 1945/1946 to 1948/1949. At the time, Torino was one of Italian biggest club, member by magnificent talents and solid squad, marked with many brilliant records, -which is called Grande Torino.

The starting lineup of Grande Torino included Valerio Bacigalupo, Aldo Ballarin, Virgilio Maroso, Pino Grezar, Mario Rigamonti, Eusebio Castigliano, Romeo Menti, Ezio Loik, Guhlielmo Gabetto, Valentino Mazzola (Captain), and Franco Ossola. The great quality of Grande Torino was proved with the fact that The Italy national football team’s starting lineup at that time, was dominated by Torino’s players, including the legendary player, Valentino Mazzola, the captain of Grande Torino (so was Azzuri national team). He was one of Italy’s all time biggest player, played well in the center of the field, master of pass, great talent at scoring, and of course really capable in leadership. Sad but true, the successful era of the team was ended by a tragedy. On May 4, 1949, on a travel of going home after a friendly match with Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal, the airplane carrying Grande Torino crashed against the Basilica of Superga, killing nearly all the players and managers (the reason why it’s called ‘The Superga Tragedy). A whole Italy were in big sorrow. After the tragedy, it seemed that the club went downhill; no big achievements were got by the club for a long times, until 1975/1976, the season which the club won its seventh scudetto title, -the last till today. By that time, no big success were achieved, except a Coppa Italia title (1992/1993), Mitropa Cup (1990/1991) and the UEFA Cup Final (1991/92), losing to Ajax Amsterdam. After that, the club spent most of its time with moving inconsistence between Serie A and Serie B. After some years in Serie B, in 2004/2005, Torino was –should be- promoted back to Serie A after winning in playoffs. But, it was almost become a bad news when the highest football governing body in Italy, FIGC, made a decision that the club was improper to continue compete in any leagues, due to a financial problem. Fortunately, the decision was revised; only noticed a finding of a new club and it can play in Serie B the next season. Then, under control and financial support from an entrepreneur, named Urbano Cairo (the chairman till now), Torino FC –the new club- ended Serie B next season in third place. Off to playoffs, won in the final and get promoted to Serie A.Later on, Torino plays in the top division, up till now.
