The Eredivisie is Holland’s top professional football league, and consists of 18 clubs. Although Holland is a tiny country, Eredivisie Voetbal has a long history of producing some fantastically skilled players and teams. It was here that the Dutch philosophy of “total football” was born, and it gave way to the Ajax teams that conquered Europe for several years, as well as Netherlands team that beat all the opposition, but which sadly failed to win a trophy. The Dutch Eredivisie suffers from financial limitations, but its bigger clubs always manage to build competitive European sides.
Netherlands: Total Football
The Dutch are renowned for a style, or rather a philosophy, called “Total Football”. It came into being in the 1960s, primarily in the Ajax coaching systems. The philosophy of Total Football depends heavily on good basics – technique, passing and movement. The idea behind Total Football is a set of players who are all at a high technical and tactical level, and who can interchange positions with each other freely throughout a game. Although Eredivisie players do have specialised positions, in the course of a game, they switch around to facilitate the attack and create unpredictability. This creates a very attractive game, based on short-passing and constant movement, making the Dutch football league matches active and exiting to watch.
