Club Rivalries

N.E.C. is one of their biggest rivals. They Both want to be the Number 1 of Gelderland.

Vitesse's aartsrivaal is N.E.C. uit Nijmegen. Sommige Vitesse-supporters spreken niet over NEC maar over ODW wat staat voor Over De Waal. Ook NEK is een veelgebruikte verbastering, uitgesproken zoals je het zegt, in tegenstelling tot wat de Nijmegenaren zelf doen: N.E.C. De wedstrijden tussen deze clubs worden dan ook de derby van het oosten genoemd, overigens geldt die aanduiding ook voor wedstrijden tegen De Graafschap uit Doetinchem.

Door de rivaliteit zijn er in het verleden vaak rellen geweest. Deze rellen stammen uit de jaren negentig. Voorheen was louter sprake van animositeit. Na de opkomst van Vitesse onder leiding van Karel Aalbers, die niet naliet te melden dat in de regio slechts plaats was voor één club, sloeg die animositeit om in agressie. Voor de supporters kan een overwinning op de aartsrivaal een slecht seizoen deels nog goedmaken, de beste ploeg van het seizoen verdient dan ook de zogenaamde titel De Nummer 1 van Gelderland. De eerste competitiewedstrijd tussen Vitesse en NEC werd gespeeld op 18 maart 1923 in Nijmegen. Vitesse won die wedstrijd met 1-2 door twee doelpunten van Gerrit Langeler.
