About
Ooijer joined Blackburn Rovers in August 2006 for a fee thought to be around £2 million. A versatile defender happy playing anywhere across the backline of in a holding midfield position Ooijer agreed a two-year with the option for a third.
After impressing in the first half of the 2006/07 season the Dutchman broke his leg, curtailing his debut term at Ewood Park. In all competitions he appears 27 times for Rovers and will hope to return to the starting XI in the 2007/08 season.
Ooijer claimed that his move away from PSV was caused by the club having reneged on their proposed 3-year extension for him and that if the club has not done so, he would have continued to play in the Eredivisie, but Mark Hughes is happy to have him at Blackburn.
Making his mark as a youth player at Ajax Amsterdam during the 1986/87 season, he featured for the reserve team, but couldn't break into the first team. With so much competition around the squad, Ooijer agreed a loan deal to FC Volendam in the 1994/1995 season before signing on for Roda JC in the beginning of the 1995/1996 season in a permanent transfer.
Used primarily as a right-back, Ooijer impressed and eventually signed for PSV midway through the 1997/98 season.
His eight years at the club saw him score 19 times in 192 appearances, while also winning four Eredivisie titles. A model professional, PSV were keen to keep Ooijer, but allowed him to sign for Genoa 1893, who were keen to defend their Italian Serie A top-flight status after apparently securing promotion in the 2004-05 season, for a fee of ¬1.5 million in July 2005.
However, after a match fixing probe saw Genoa relegated to Serie C, Ooijer's proposed transfer hit the rocks, and he returned to PSV.
He did get his transfer though, and at the age of 32, signed for Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2006. Despite initial problems, Ooijer has provided excellent cover and versatility in defence as Rovers bid to recreate their impressive campaign of 2005/06 when they made it into Europe.
