Heather Mitts is a defender for the
USA Women's National Soccer Team.
In June 2008 Heather worked on two
completely different soccer events: the Beijing Olympics and her soccer camp for kids in California. In 2007 she had to sit on the sidelines for both the Womens's World Cup and her soocer
camp,
due to a knee injury. In spring 2008, she fully recovered from the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that put her out of the 2007 World Cup, and was one of the final 22 players
selected for
the 2008 Olympic women's squad
Team USA was in South Korea in the middle of June 2008 for an international tuneup, the Peace Queen Cup.
The day after Mitts' 30th birthday her teammate
Cat Whitehall
tore
her
ACL
in
Seoul whilst practising. Cat's tear came just weeks after the Women's team lost midfielder Leslie Osborne due to another torn ACL.
Everyone
on the
team is
very
happy that
Heather
is
recovered
especially with the loss of the other two players. Of the 22 selected for the trip to Korea, 18 made
the U.S.
soccer team's
Olympic
squad. In
addition three
alternates were chosen.
Heather Mitts made 3 appearances for USA in early 2008 is practicing like a madwoman, ensuring that she was in top shape for her team and country, ready to
hold
the
backline
against
the
world.
Although Carli Lloyd scored winning goal in the sixth minute of overtime (and only goal) in the women's Olympic soccer finals in Beijing, Heather Mitts and Hope Solo bailed out their
teammates
frequently as the tough women from Brazil got dangerously close to scoring on man occasions. The defense held out thanks to Heather and the United States soccer team beat Brazil 1-0
to capture
the gold medal and win the Olympics for a third time in four Olympics. THe US Soccer team dominated the field and the tournament yet again. Heather played for the entire game, and
was
enthusiastically hugging and celebrating at the final whistle.
