Club Overview

Legia Warszawa is a Polish professional football club based in Warsaw, Poland. Currently it is the only Warsaw-based football club participating in the Orange Ekstraklasa. Legia is widely regarded as one of the most successful Polish football clubs in history and has further emerged as the Orange Ekstraklasa champion for the 2005/2006 season.

Club History

Legia was founded in March, 1916 (during the military operations of the World War I on the eastern front) in the neighborhood of Maniewicze in Volhynia as the football club of the Polish Legions. After World War I (since July 31, 1922) it became the main football club of the Polish Army - Wojskowy Klub Sportowy Legia Warszawa (Military Sports Club Legia Warsaw). In the years 1949 - 1957 Legia was known by the name CWKS Warszawa (Central Military Sports Club Warsaw).

Stars of the Current Squad

Takesure Chinyama - First arrived on trail at Legia at the start of the 2007 season. Groclin then took him when he was rejected from Legia. Groclin at the end of that season released him because of heart problems. Legia doctors cleared him of any such things and he began to play. At the start of the 2008 season no one really expected him to replace Bartlomeij Grzelak, yet he did just that and scored an astonishing 15 league goals in his first year at the club

Miroslav Radovic - Joined after the 2007 winning season and became considered at the time quite a bad signing on the part of Legia. After playing no matches during the fall session of the Orange Ekstraklasa he came surging forward into a starting 11 position. Many believe him to be one of the best right midfielders in the Polish league and most definitely one of Legia's key players

Roger - Roger always played a key role in Legia after his move from Juventude in a wide range of positions. His first season he played as left wing and had mixed results. After Jan Urban took over the managerial spot he was shifted to center midfield. Roger excelled in this position, being acclaimed as the best midfielder in the Polish league. Paris Saint Germain have been after Roger for quite a while now but Roger has stated that he will stay at Legia till at least the end of the 2008 season. He became a naturalized Polish citizen just before Euro 2008 and was included into the final squad without any international experience.because of his new Polish nationality Roger is jokingly referred to as Rogerowski

Stadium

Legia Warszawa has spent almost its entire history at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego (Polish Army Stadium in English) Opened the 9th of August 1930, was a gift from then president of Poland Jozef Pilsudski. The record attendance for the stadium was in 1958 against LKS Lodz with 40,000 spectators in the stands. Since those days seats were put into the stadium and the capacity was reduced to at first 11,500 but later expanded to 13,628. Legia finally decided to increase the stadium capacity and the project in currently underway. The new stadium is to be built directly over the old construction one section of the stadium at a time. The cost of the new stadium is set to be 250 million zloty. Capacity for the new stadium hasn't been set but is thought to be around 30,500 to 35,000 seats.
