West Ham

West Ham United FC, also known as the The Hammers and The Irons, is English Premier League team that plays out of Upton Park, East London. The club was originally founded in 1895, by referee and foreman Dave Taylor and owner Arnold Hills. West Ham United FC was originally named Thames Ironworks F.C. The club joined the London League in 1897, became professional in 1898, and was promoted to Division One in its first try. In 1900 Thames Iron Works FC changed their name to West Ham FC, after disputes over the financing of Thames Ironworks F.C. West Ham United appointed Syd King to become the first manager of the organization. In 1923 The Irons went to their first FA Cup final, losing to the Bolton Wanderers by a score of 2-0.Overall the team has won: three FA Cups, one Charity Shield, one Cup Winners Cup and one Intertoto Cup. Club legends such as Geoff Hurst, Billy Bonds, and Bobby Moore helped West Ham achieve these titles. Currently West Ham features superstars such as defenders Lucas Neilland Anton Julian Ferdinand, and winger Fredrik Ljungberg.

The West Ham United Crest proudly represents the history and traditions of West Ham FC. The crest has a crossed pair of rivet hammers; tools commonly used in the iron and shipbuilding industry, which reflect the club’s origins as Ironworks FC. A castle was added in 1903 to West Ham’s crest and represents an important local building the Green Street House. The castle also represents a contribution made by Old Castle Swifts FC, when West Ham used their turf as a practice field. The crest was redesigned in 1990 and features a wider yellow castle. The designer also altered shape of the hammer heads and border, in order to give it a more substantial feel to the iconography.

As all the injured superstar players are back to being fully healthy, West Ham United is looking a lot more like a championship type squad. There will be no excuses for the team to be stuck at the 10th place of the Premier League table as they were last season. Players like Swedish international winger Freddie Ljungberg and Kieron Dyer who were given large contracts last season are expected to step their game up and perform or will ultimately be kicked of the squad.

The chairman replaced manager Alan Curbishley, with Italian legend Gianfranco Zola. Despite having little previous coaching experience, there are high expectations for Zola to do good this season. The Hammers will be aiming for the top of the English Premier League and trying to get a spot in the Champions League and UEFA Cup.
