The
Russian Football Team has been on a roller coaster ride of success ever since it was formed in 1912. They joined FIFA in 1942, and won their first game against Bulgaria. During 1960 the Russian national team experienced its most success, as stars like Lev Yashin, the team's goalkeeper, helped Russia win the UEFA Euro. During the mid seventies till the mid eighties the team was not doing too well, as they did not go very far in any competition. Due to the political situation in the Soviet Union during the 1990s, the team was renamed from the U.S.S.R to team Russia. Following that, the Russian National team went through six coaching transitions, as no coach could take the team to a championship. After noticing that Russian coaches don't have what it takes to get a championship title, Guus Hiddink, a Dutchman, was appointed to the manager position. Currently the Russian national soccer team is playing in the Euro 2008 and with Hiddink's coaching they have a good shot at the title.
