Serie A

Serie A corresponds to the First Division of Italian Professional Football, also know as Calcio. The league contains 20 clubs teams, which play each other two times during the season. Included in the list of teams, which play in the league is former UEFA Cup champions Juventes and the legendary club Inter Milan. These clubs compete for the prestigious Serie A TIM trophy. If a team finishes in the top four of the league they qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with first and second places qualify directly to the group stage.

Serie A was founded in 1898 and was divided into regional groups, in order to determine the best football teams in the country. The league started playing as a unified competition since 1922, but all the previous titles are also recognized by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti (The National Professional League). In 1949, a plane crashed carrying Tornio FC players, which turned into the biggest tragedy experienced by the league. Currently the league is ranked amongst one of highest by UEFA and FIFA.

Because of sponsorship matters the name of the competition is officially Serie A TIM. Clubs can qualify for the UEFA competitions if they finish on the top of the chart but also can be relegated to the Serie B if they finish in the bottom. Juventus FC of Turin is the most successful club in the Italian league with 27 titles, and AC Milan is in second place with 17. Every time a club wins the league it is granted a Scudetto patch on its shirt for the following season. Every ten national titles give the club a golden star above their logo.
