The Estadio Saprissa is the highest capacity stadium in Costa Rica. Located in San Juan de Tibás, San Jose, the stadium has a capacity of 24,000. Home of the Deportivo Saprissa, the stadium was named in honour of the team's founder, Ricardo Saprissa. Image:Estadio-Saprissa2.jpg

Estadio Saprissa History

Deportivo Saprissa originally played at the Costa Rica National Stadium. But in 1955, Ricardo Saprissa started to look for a new site that could be used as a training ground and also as a possible location for a new stadium. After 10 years of research, he found the perfect site in n San Juan de Tibás. On October, 12th 1966, the construction of the new Estadio Saprissa began. 6 years later, on August 27th 1972, the stadium was officially opened. The first match was between Deportivo Saprissa and Comunicaciones of Guatemala. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Nowadays, the stadium is also used by the Costa Rica National Team.
