Chosen as the host stadium for the UEFA Champions League 2009 final, the Stadio Olympico has been equated with great Italian arenas like the Roman Forum.

The Stadio Olimpico in located in Rome and has a seating capacity of 81,903 seats and is one of the temples of world sport, and one of the largest stadiums in Europe. It is the host stadium for two Seria A clubs - AS Roma and SS Lazio, and is also the Italian National team's home stadium.

Stadium History

Stadio Olimpico was built in 1952 in anticipation of the Olympic Games in 1960 and was rennovated in 1989 for the global demands of the World Cup in 1990. The Olympic Stadium has undergone further changes such as as the turnstiles at entryways and improvements in changing rooms and replacement and repositioning of existing seats to make them more comfortable.

This stadium was used for the Olympic Games in 1960 (XXVII Olympiad. In the stadium's outer grounds (literally in the ground) there are various mosaics depicting different Olympic sports (discus, jumping, running), and there are also similar statues in the gardens next to the stadium.

Since the Olypmics, Stadio Olimpico has been the host of huge sports events, including the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Rome Travel Tips

Usually most people find the that April, May, and late September through October are the best times to visit. This a great time for football fans as it is the beginning and the end of the football seasons. And this year, Rome will be the host city for the 2009 Champions League Final match. Most people go on Vacation in August and it is probably the least desirable month to travel to Rome. Also, as the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day, and you will never see all of it in a week, let alone a day. Rome is one of the last places on earth where there is a great meal to be had in almost every corner of the city. Almost everything can be had in this great city, but pizza is always a great chose. There are several areas of the city that have many cafes and that you can have different choices and great views of many attractions of the city, including the Pantheon. It helps to know some Italian, but most servers know English and German. And remember, you cannot go wrong with a glass of house wine.
