The Turkish National Team is the football team that represents the country of Turkey and is controlled by the Turkish Football Federation. The squad is also known as the Crescent Stars. When playing at home, the squad wears a uniform consisting of red shirts and shorts. The Turkish National Soccer has not won any major international competition yet. The furthest that the squad went was reaching the semi-final in the 2002 World Cup. Currently, all time apperance leader Rüştü Reçber and Villarreal CF striker Nihat Kahveci are the superstars of the Turkish National Soccer Team.
The Turkish National Team was founded in 1923, right after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Thier first match was against Romania, and first international competition was the 1954 World Cup. The Crescent Stars participation in international football inspired the country of Turkey to create a national league in the 1960s, which introduced Turkish clubs into European Competitions. During the 1980’s the Turks had thier worst years, as they were defeated by England twice, by a score of 8-0. However, legendary Crescent Star players such as defender Bülent Korkmaz helped the team bounce back from their losses. The Turish National Football Team qualified for the 1996 Euro, beating Switzerland and Sweden by a score of 2-1.
Fatih Terim- a perfect match for the Turkish National Football team
The Turkish National Football Team is currently managed by Fatih Terim, who has been succesful on both the national and international level. He started his professional soccer career playing for several club team, and ended it at the age of 32. Terim started coaching the Crescent Stars in 1990, as an assistant coach, and became manager of the squad in 1993. The Turks qualified for the 1996 Euro under his leadership. He coached the club team Galatasaray, and won 4 consecutive Turkish League Titles and the UEFA Cup in 2000. Under his leadership, Turkey will be competing in the 2008 Euro Cup.
