UEFA EURO 2012

The UEFA EURO 2012™ European football tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between June 9 and July 1 of 2012. Eight cities - 4 in each host country - were selected by the UEFA confederation as venues for the competition.

The draw for the EURO 2012 qualifiers is scheduled for January of 2010 in one of host cities. After the qualifiers are played in 2010 and 2011, 16 teams will qualify for the 2012 EURO Final Stage and will join the host nations Poland and Ukraine for the final tournament. The host nations both automatically qualify for the final group stage.

The European Cup of Nations 2012 is the first major sports event to be held in the former communist Eastern Europe since the 1980 Olympic Games. The decision to award Poland and Ukraine was based on the fact that although these countries do not have a lot of tradition in football at continental level, the populations of both nations are truly passioned about the sport.

But, there were concerns about Poland's bid to host the EURO 2012 because of a corruption scandal in the Polish national league that almost caused the country to be eliminated from the EURO 2008. Late lobbying by Ukraine and Poland played a big role as the deciding factor to confirm the two countries as the hosts of the EURO 2012.

Spain is the title defender and along with Germany, Italy, France, Portugal and the Netherlands will certainly be among the favourites to claim the title of best football team in Europe again in 2012.
