US Soccer

US Soccer is represented by the men's, women's and U-17 teams in international soccer competitions and matches. The US soccer team is controlled by the U.S. Soccer Federation and is part of the CONCACAF region. The team has participated in 8 FIFA World Cups and was of the 13 nations who played in the first edition of the tournament where the US team finished in third place, their best final position up to now.

US Soccer Team's Road to the World Cup

Throughout 2008, USA will play a series of friendly matches that leads up to World Cup qualifying in June. It is critical that the team get good results during these qualification matches. There are only two players in the small group of US Soccer Team’s all-time best players who have not retired (Landon Donovan and Kasey Keller) so the remainder of the team will not be as experienced in international caps. Coach Bob Bradley has his work cut our for him. Currently, Eddie Johnson and Donovan each seven World Cup goals, and Landon Donovan is the clear leader when it comes to international caps (100) and team goals.

In 2009 the US Soccer Team will travel to South Africa to compete in the FIFA Confederations Cup, a relatively new competition with a interesting and highly competitive format that brings together the champions of each of the six confederations. In the team’s last appearance in the Confederations Cup in 2003 in France, the US team was eliminated in the opening stage. For 2009, the team qualified based on its 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup victory, and are planning to make a much better showing in this edition of the tournament. This competition is a lead-in to the most important competition for the US Team, the FIFA World Cup finals being held in South Africa in 2010.

In December 2009, the World Cup 2010 draw will take place in Capetown and USA will (hopefully) be added to a first round group, and ideally not pitted against Italy or another Euro champion. The eight groups will be comprised of 32 teams and only the top two move on to the next round. The US Men's Soccer team has a long road ahead but maintaining world class play is not supposed to be easy.
