About
Wilson Roberto Palacios Suazo (born July 29, 1984 in La Ceiba, Honduras) is a Honduran association football midfielder, currently playing for Wigan Athletic. He signed for Wigan on January 11, 2008 from Olimpia following the expiry of his loan spell at Birmingham City.
Background
Wilson Palacios, along with his brothers (Milton, Jerry, Johnny and Edwin), started his career as a footballer with Club Deportivo Victoria, from which all five players were later transferred to Olimpia. He is remembered for scoring a stupendous goal from the half-way line against Marathón in the final minutes of a game in 2006.
Reports in the Honduran press stated that Palacios had gone missing during August 2007, until his father stated that Palacios had confirmed he was actually in London in a trial period with Premier League club Arsenal.
Club Football
Birmingham City
On August 24, 2007 Birmingham City announced that after a recommendation from Arsène Wenger they were offering the player a trial with a view to a six month loan, which was agreed on August 31, 2007.
Palacios made his full debut for Birmingham against Liverpool at Anfield in a 0–0 draw. In October 2007 manager Steve Bruce, who likened Palacios to a young Paul Ince, said that Birmingham intended to make his loan a permanent transfer. but the player's absence following his brother's kidnap meant that new manager Alex McLeish had not seen enough of him to sign him permanently.
Wigan
On January 11, 2008, Palacios rejoined Bruce at Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee, and made his debut the following day against Derby County. Since his debut, Wigan Athletic fans have been impressed with some labeling him as one of the most talented players the club has ever seen. Great hard working midfielder who has really helped Wigan in their so far successful bid to remain in the Premier League for another year.
Teammate Michael Brown has heaped praise on the Honduran. He said, "He has got a lot of talent, two good feet, he can head, tackle and he likes getting forward."
Palacios' excellent form lead him, as well as Ecuadorian club teammate Antonio Valencia, to be linked with a £8m move to Manchester United in summer 2008.
International Football
Wilson Palacios has already represented his country for over 50 times even though he is still 23 years of age. He is widely considered as the best Honduran player of this generation alongside David Suazo who currently plays for Internazionale. He has made 4 goals with the national team.
